Need help with my kitty

So, I told my dad to buy me a pack of cat food and then I gave a few bits to my cat so I can see if he'll eat it or not and he keeps smelling it and looking at me and he's not eating it. I tried to put it on his mouth but yes he ate it but he doesn't want to actually eat it. I need help, how do I teach him to eat not just fish.

How do I also clean my cat's mouth to prevent bad breath?

EDIT 8/28/2013: Okay so I'm feeding my cat everyday with a raw fish not just everyday but every time he'll eat, Roary said that I should only give him raw fish as an occasional because my cat is a spoiled kitty. I told my dad to get me a cat biscuits today and I'll see if my cat would eat it (I hope so), I'll also get him a dry and wet cat food and I'll only feed him a raw fish on his birthday. He is born on February but I actually don't know what day it is but I considered his birthday as February 11. I will also get my kitty cat vaccine'd. I tried to rush my cat's teeth but it seems that I did it very hard, his tooth on his left side bleeds. Anybody knows a way to prevent bad breath on cats and how would I make my cat's teeth strong?

 

Has the cat recently had any kind of vaccinations? Vaccinations can have side effects to animals, including loss of appetite. As for the bad breath, you can use lemon juice, parsley, or even go as far to buy a cat tooth brush (along with paste).

* I'd let the food sit by him for a day, if he still doesn't touch it, I'd see a veterinarian.

EDIT: Put the food in a bowl and have it sit there, but make sure he knows where it is. Let this happen on his own time, if he still doesn't eat within a day than contact a veterinarian.

 

My cat is an extremely picky eater, she'll eat her regular food but dare I change her food or get something cheaper she'll be fussy and not even go near her bowl. You said your cat likes fish? Try him on some fish flavored wet food mixed with what you bought him, tuna works well too but is really smelly. As for his bad breath you can get your cat these mini tooth brushes that go on your finger and you can manually brush it's teeth and they work well.

 

Most cats are extremely fussy eaters. If she doesn't start eating you should take him straight to the VET! They'll be able to help you with choosing the right food for your cat and show you methods on how to reduce chance of your cat getting smelly breath. I wouldn't think hand feeding your cat would be a smart idea since like with humans he'll get used to it and expect it all the time.

 

Ha.. Been hand feeding my cat since he was a little tucker and now he sits up on the kitchen bench and doesn't move until someone feeds him, wrong mistake Chloe! Cats are extremely fussy, just buy different flavors and brands and test them out, and once you find one that he'll eat then bingo you're set. Cat's naturally have bad breath as well especially after some fishy food, but as above said you can actually buy mini toothbrushes and toothpaste made for cats. If you have any other problems with him feel free to PM me, he sounds a lot like my little guy and is fussy as hell!

 

what type of food does your cat eat? My cat mostly eats those wet food pouches(only chicken so you could say he is a fussy eater), but sometimes he eats the hard dry stuff idk what its called. If your cat doesn't eat anything then take it to the vet. Try different types of meat etc.

 

It's like my dog, I put gravy in his biscuits once and now he wont eat biscuits without it. If you've been feeding the cat fish, as in tuna or something, then the likelihood is that it wont settle for anything less. I'd leave some meat out and when the cat's hungry enough, it'll eat.

 

do you have neighbors that have catflaps because your cat could be stealing your neighbors cat food cats are known for this or he/she could be hunting/being fed of someone else

 

I would go and get some tooth brushes you can actually brush your cats teeth.

 

If this is a kitten you are talking about, you should not be feeding it wet food as it will bloat the cat and cause loss of appetite.

Get some dry biscuits and don't watch over him when he is hungry. He will eat it at some point during the day.

Also, you do not need to clean your cats teeth. Biscuits will help it keep its teeth strong.

 

I'm afraid feeding him only fish has seeded a bad habit. You might want to do what a lot of people have said and leave him with just dry food for a while. I think he'll figure it out nice and quickly once he gets hungry.

 

He likes to eat raw fish.

You should only give him raw fish as an occasional treat or, as you've found out you'll end up with a spoiled kitty.

Just stop feeding him fish.
Only put out the food you want him to eat and if he doesn't eat it, just leave him. He will eat it when he is hungry and he will eventually learn that that is his food.
