    Aftermarket mobo + dell case?

Hey guys. Got a question. Title basically explains it. Could I put an aftermarket mobo in a Dell case? It's an Inspiron 530S. Reason why is that the socket us LGA775 and I hear they are money pits. I wanted to put an AMD mobo in it cause those looked cheaper since I'm on a tight budget. If I can do so, can you recommend any mobos, or anything that could help me in the process? Thanks in advance :D

Edit: Did a bit of my own research on Google, and saw someone suggested a micro ATX mobo on Tom's Hardware. Could this work?

yes as long as you match the form factor allowed by the case, sounds like this one accepts micro-atx so just go to newegg and search for those motherboards and based on reviews/what specs you need purchase one.

Oh, and if you're looking to play games, the graphics card is very important too. So there's that. Trust me, you can't get away with upgrading one or two components cheaply.

So you plan on buying a processor, a motherboard, and a gpu? Seems to me you almost have yourself a full computer there...

Also because pre-built pc's usually cheap out on their power supplies (they don't really list what they are in the specs so they go cheap) if you're adding in newer components you might have to look into that as well...

My suggestion is just buy a $45 mid tower case (coolermaster has a really cool looking one with good air flow) and drop the parts into that instead. (You can salvage some stuff from the dell if you want).

edit: You'd have to give me a price range if you're looking for specific components.

How exactly do I profit from this?
And to answer your questions. I'm on a budget of about $300-$400, looking to play all indie horror games at max fps, and most modern games at a decent fps.

That's not really going to happen. A fairly good graphics card will eat up half of that. A fairly good CPU is going to eat up the other half.

Then you still need 8GB of ram (like $50-70) and a mobo ($50-$100).

And I would definetly recommend buying a cheap case ($50 or less) and a power supply ($30-40) and it will save you a lot of hassle.

I'm always sketched by psu's that are that cheap, I'd look in the $60-80 range but maybe I'm a little overcautious.

You can get them fairly cheap if you wait for a newegg sale (which happen about every day). And for a very budget build, you can't afford to be spending $60 for a PSU.

That's not going to happen man. Just save for a new build. If you have $400 you're more than halfway there.

This. For $600 you can get a pretty damn decent computer. If you don't game and install linux, you can do $500 easy.

Well, it is definitely a project for over time. I guess I can. buy each part as I get the money for it. Like buy a good part, wait till next week, buy the next, etc. I'm getting an amd mobo. Any recommendations?

Any particular reason you're choosing an AMD mobo? I'm really not that up-to-date on the current hardware but I'd figure you should pick a processor first and a motherboard that suits it..

    here, this is for you

That doesn't make any sense really, just save the money then over a week or two order all your parts. Then you can scope out the best deals etc.. prices get dropped all the time with older components so something that was $100 might drop down to $70 three months from now. Also if you change your mind on a part you're stuck.

Nothing wrong with picking an AMD motherboard really, but he's right. Generally you pick your processor first and then pick a motherboard that supports it.

edit: the logical increments guide looks good until you get into the higher end systems, might want to start there if you're looking for a graphics card/cpu
