It's time to finally decide on mini-ranks: Helpful for site or just for fun?

The original intention I had when I suggested Mini-ranks was that they be an opportunity to boost activity for the site and give recognition to those where a rank itself wasn't warranted. This would include rewards for posting, participating in community events, etc. People would genuinely want to obtain a mini-rank, regardless if it just is a few pixels on the side of your post-bit.

What it currently is a joke. They are being made willy-nilly and distributed in a Finn-esque (for lack of a better term) way. They hold no value and no one could care less about them except for a few people in the spam forum.

Due to mini-ranks being a joke they hold no value and can't be used as rewards or ranks properly. Take the current "should the CDT get a rank/mini-rank debate". People do not think that the CDT should get a rank as it has been tried before with UE and OGV and people would simply join for the rank and abuse it, etc. The CDT cannot be given a mini-rank however either as mini-ranks are worth less than dirt currently so no one cares for them at all and doesn't even bother looking at them.

The thing that is irritating is that if mini-ranks were purged and were taken seriously, they could do a lot of good for the site. It would encourage members to post and participate in events, etc. They wouldn't be seen so much as ranks that hold trust however so they couldn't be abused and then the CDT, OGV and whoever else would be able to more easily identified. The issue has been discussed previously, no one knows who is in the CDT or OGV. I am the OP of a thread in Community General that shows who is in the CDT and what we aim to do and yet hardly anyone knows of its existence. This would make us more easily identifiable with the community (OGV too and whoever else). For example, someone needs their guide verified but can't find the sticky that shows who is in the team that they can PM their guide too. With the mini-ranks they could find them in passing through browsing other parts of Sythe and remember them for the future. Another example that I believe Shoop? has experienced multiple times is that people would not believe he was in the OGV and he had to refer them to the stickied thread often to which they would not comply and nothing would be accomplished. Being able to have a badge on your post-bit would cut through the bull-shit and make their job of serving the public that much easier.

So now it is the time to decide, denizens of Sythe.

Would it be better for the site to purge the mini-ranks and promote activity and have them enjoyed by many?

Would it be better for the site to leave them as is and have them worth less than dirt and enjoyed by a few?

Can you not read? It covers a different part of mini-ranks. Mine is talking about the purging of them or not and his is talking about an option to show/not show them.

 

I've been trying to make the same point on other threads and support de saturizing the site of the useless mini ranks and making mini ranks mean something instead of the abundance of useless ranks that exist now.

 

getting rid of them isn't going to make the site active, nor is adding them, only thing it will do is make more people want to spam.

I say leave them how they are. I am one of the few sf members that enjoys them.

 

It won't magically make the site viral with over 9000 million viewers or anything but it will have a positive influence on the site in general. Also not everyone that will post for them will spam. Regardless -

Miniranks aren't meant to be taken very seriously. Neither are fun ranks, but fun ranks sound more like how you want miniranks to be, and that shouldn't happen. It looks to me that most your paragraph was having a boner over a possible OGV minirank so people can identify you. Again, if this was necessary, a rank would be more appropriate. Think of miniranks more like fun achievements, that you can rack up by being an active member of Sythe. In addition, your poll is quite retarded. I want to leave it as is, but I don't think it's worth less than dirt. I do however think it's enjoyed by many, but I don't want it purged. Therefore, I'll abstain from voting until you have an option that fits. You also wrote an essay trying to sway people from their beliefs, in a poll. Both these awful practices nullify the results. I'm sure you may even have mass messaged people telling them to vote one way over the other, as there's not a proportionate amount of posts to votes - it's very odd.


All that being said, there's already a poll going on, and most people either want the system left as-is or an option to disable the miniranks. Other concerns, which a few members make very vocal, are not shared by the majority of Sythe. That includes getting rid of the miniranks you deem not worthy, aka Spam Forum miniranks. Just wait until my poll is over, and then make a fair vote regarding a purge, based on the outcome.

 

i like them. I think they are fun.

 

Purge them and make a system to get them, gosh darn it.

I'd much rather have miniranks be earnt and show things, with them not being so common compared to being chucked all over the place for no reason as they're pretty much shit atm.

Of course I wrote a few paragraphs showcasing my opinion and trying to persuade others to join it. Haven't you heard of debating before? And yes, I did make use of positive and negative connotations and vocabulary, but who wouldn't? This is something that has been bugging me for some time and it is time to play for keeps. Far from odd really.

That result is only with-in the confines of your poll, it doesn't make mention of the option to purge the mini-ranks.

This opinion of yours that only a few people have "other concerns" seems to have been proven wrong by my poll. Majority of the people (maybe majority is not strong enough of a word?), 88.46% of Sythe members that have voted wish for it to be purged. Included in this are not one but two global moderators. Their roles on the site are to promote activity and strengthen the community, surely they will have good judgement on this?

Regardless I still think your poll is valid in points. I believe we should have a neutral 3rd party (A global moderator/admin, not Syed -.-) make a poll with the options being as follows:

Purge Mini-ranks
Purge Mini-ranks with option to hide them
Leave Mini-ranks as is
Leave Mini-ranks as is with option to hide them

With a very brief description for each poll in the OP that will not portray any option negatively or positively.

 

This thread is way to biased. For starters, you stated "Haven't you ever heard of debating before?" Well, if you are debating on a forum, OP shouldn't have stated their opinion in the OP.

Though, I do agree to purge, this thread had no reason to be made other then your complaining.

 

Surely my reason for bringing it up is so something can be done about it RATHER THAN having people idly complain about it?

 

For Christ's sake, can we please get rid of the majority of miniranks? This has gone on for long enough and is getting way out of control. I mean there are literally people SELLING miniranks http://www.sythe.org/digital-curren...ythe-org-miniranks-pp-rsgp-instant-glory.html, bribing (http://puu.sh/3BLvl.png), and people spamming all over the place to earn them (http://www.sythe.org/spam-forum/1598449-get-reference-3-a.html). And these are just a few examples, I could name a bunch more if I wanted to.

There should only be 5-6 legitimate miniranks:

• Sythe donations bond holder
• MotM
• Miniranks you get from winning competitions (whatever happened to the competition winner FUN rank?)
• Holiday miniranks (where you are only awarded the minirank for being active on a given holiday)
• Forum Participant miniranks (debatable)
• Yearly Sythe Award Winner

The rest of them are BS. Not only do they look tacky, but some are extremely offensive, random, and frankly give site a bad rep. Every other thread in the SF for the past month, at least, has had something to do with obtaining miniranks. And people wonder why the SF has gone to shit.

 

That's about all the mini-ranks I would have plus

Event Participant (encourage activity in tournaments or events etc)
and maybe CDT/OGV member

 

Event Participant could be given to those who participate and play on the tournament till they lose. To keep the minirank, they would maybe have to participate on at least every second tournament.
