So in a few days time I'll start playing World of Warcraft. I'm thinking of making a mage focussed on DPS. My question to you is; What character do you like and why?

Is starting a mage something I might regret later on? And how should I become knowledgable about the world of World of Warcraft? Should I just play and learn as it comes or are there some essentials I might want to know before I start playing?

On a side note, that's a lot of questions!

    Cheers!

I'm not so experienced on WoW, but I've managed to get a priest to level 87 and a tauren paladin to 40. About magic I think undead or blood elf would be a nice race to choose.I love rogues because of the PvP aspect of them as to your knowledge of getting the handle of the game , I suggest you to watch some youtube videos that will make your gameplay easily.

Having played since 2006 and tried every class, I've always loved my Druid because it offers a wide variety of playstyles: you can be a ranged caster like the Mage, bear tank, cat form similar to Rogue, and a healing tree. They excel at pretty much everything from PvE to PvP to just leveling. I'd suggest you start there.

As for any class being a bad idea? No, not anymore. You can pick up any class and be more or less successful with it - the game doesn't get difficult at all until level 80+.

Don't worry about knowing everything in the game, you'll pick it up as it comes to you. If you want to know more about the basics however feel free to PM me and maybe I can help.

On that note: Before you start playing, I suggest you take advantage of WoW's Recruit-A-Friend program. You'll get lots of goodies, like triple experience gain. I'm going to assume that, since you're Dutch, you'll be playing on the EU servers, which would mean I couldn't personally recruit you as I'm in NA. However, there are some EU players here that might be able to recruit you if you decide to play on the EU servers and not NA.

    Thanks!

That sounds like a good idea. If I can be everything I'd have to love some of it, right? Cool that all classes are about equal, I was kind of afraid of Runescape alike situations there. Thanks for offering your help! I knew about the recruit a friend thing, I'm actually starting a new account at the same time as a friend of mine, and we'll play together. He's played WoW before so he suggested using the option of him recruiting me.

Hey! Coming from someone who has played World of Warcraft on and off since Vanilla and is an extreme nerd with 4 lvl 90s and 4 lvl 85s.

First thing you gotta know is the realm you choose, each realm is either RPG as in Roleplaying game, PvP or PvE. I have always been doing PvP and probably one of the reasons is because all the good PvE guilds usually have an age limit of 18 plus i've got denied on every single guild i applied to. Player vs Player (PvP) which i am currently doing is really fun since you get different ratings from doing what's called arena, Arena is actually as it sounds for example you can do 2vs2 which is you and another dps or healer coming up against 2 randoms that can be exactly and class possible, then there is 3vs3 and 5vs5 which is exactly the same but with more people.

When it comes to PvP Classes can be really important if you haven't been through a Patch before, that's when they will either buff or nerf your character and as it sounds, buff is good nerf is bad and.

What i am trying to say is if you choose to PvP or Pve you might get a nerf on your character thats when people usually choose to reroll (i don't) Since nerf's can really make your character so shit none will want to play with you :c.

I have to disagree with you ABK. While it's true there are some distinctions between PvP and PvE realms, they are not substantial - the only major difference is the PvP itself, being more invasive thanks to the Cross-Realm Zone technology. Personally, I think the game isn't quite itself with artificially restricted zones (i.e. PvE realms) but suit to taste. I have a feeling he'll be playing the same realm as his friend, in any case.

Now, as for classes, I have to strongly disagree. Absolutely DON'T pick your class based on what's strong or weak in PvP right now. Class strength is constantly in flux and by the time you reach 90 with that character it'll probably have changed significantly. Pick a class based on who you enjoy to play, not who others tell you is strong. You'll perform much better on a class that is mediocre right now but you've developed 100 hours of practice with as opposed to the 'FOTM' (flavor of the month) you've never played before.

Let's take just as an example Retribution paladin for PvE. Back in Cataclysm i played Retribution for PvE i knew perfect rotation i was having full normal DS10 Gear and yet i was running Pugs with noobs that had no good gear whatsoever and guess what? I was doing about the lowest dps in the group. Just as an example Retribution paladins doesnt change ever, they are good for PvP terrible for PvE.

That's what i kept telling myself. If you actually want to do PvP (Arena, Not BGs) and PvE(Not dungeons) then it will really matter wether you like it or not. Back again to Retribution Paladins, I was applying for a PvE guild everything was good i had TS the gear for it enchants gemming reforging and all of that, the only problem was that they were not looking for Retri Paladins because of the fact that they did not do enough dps.

I guess that PvP isnt really that much the same when it comes to classes but it can be like that so you have to reroll incase the season is very bad and people really will not want to play with you which brings me to another example for PvP. I got a friend on my server which plays Rogue and i can honestly tell you he's Glad material and he is considering rerolling because of how shit they have made Rogues and if you look on the ladder you will see that there are not many rogues on there because they suck at the moment

I've been playing a dk for a while now, they are terrible at pvp as any role, and at the moment frost is terrible for pve. I've put work into my rotation and it does pay off. No matter what class you roll it will see ups and downs, I was topping charts in 5.2 but since dks hardly scale as well as other classes I fell behind, my guild is still keeping me because they know it blows and I still have utility for heroics but even now rets are one of the top mdps classes and at the beginning of the expansion they were terrible. I don't recommend rolling a class because it is good in pvp since Blizz is more willing to nerf pvp over pve aspects of the game. The 535 ret in my group is able to compete in dps with the 544 feral druid. The 542 ret is topping the charts.

I personally rolled dk because I liked to stick to my opponent rather than run away and cast. It's all about personal preference but the best way to pick up on the game is to play a druid, paladin, or monk since they can easily teach you the different roles classes play in WoW. If you like a class stick with it, don't pick a class because it's op in pvp or pve because the numbers will change.

I also recommend you pick up spellflash or a clc addon if you're having trouble with your dps, I use clc dk so I don't have to watch my diseases but I remember even the paladin one was amazing for learning the rotation back in cata.

Here's personal experience I rerolled a hunter at one point because they had a 1 button macro that was op for pvp but by the time I hit 90 the macro wasn't even useful as Blizz had changed most of the abilities in that macro and I dropped my hunter and only recently started gearing him up again because I had nothing else to do.

Yeah, i agree about the clc addon that's the one i used at the start and you really learn much from having it. That's something you should download.

Okay i pretty much do agree with the resto but dont get me wrong, i myself wouldn't reroll a class because it was bad. I've been playing Paladin for long now. What i did was that i switched spec from Retribution to Holy.

If it looked like it i did not mean that a class will always suck or will always be good but there will be some classes that really doesnt change for many patches for example: Hunter, they have now been good since the start of Mists of Pandaria. So sure classes will change but it can take patches, even expansions for them to actually be good.

And for the record UHDK's arent that bad.
