New Theme

please mr. Sythe, please.

You have tons of people with talent here, use them. Why not run a competition for a new theme? I feel that hosting a contest with just a background and logo really wasn't great since it doesn't match the rest of the site much.

It's about time we changed the looks. Hopefully something kick ass that intrigues people.

 

I don't think a contest would work - a theme takes a long time to produce. I personally wouldn't be happy putting all that time into a theme that may never be used. Richard would have to commission someone if this was going to be done

 

It worked fine with the background and logo. Some people just enjoy helping out and giving something back to a great community.

 

Backgrounds and logos are very small things for experienced graphics artists, taking perhaps half an hour. Even the best theme designers, assuming they are already familiar with this particular version of vB, including this particular set of mods we are using, would need at least 5-6 hours to craft a decent theme. Bare minimum. So please don't play it off as though I don't want to give back to the community because I'm selfish.

Having said that, I do agree that the theme needs a change.

I don't dispute the fact that people are willing, I just argue that a competition would not be the best way to go about getting a theme. Perhaps a competition could be held for the best styling of the main page, and then the winner of that goes on to design the rest of the site? I think that that could work.

It should be noted however that MoonGlare didn't really design a whole theme, he just modified the existing one. There is only so far that that can take us, and I would argue that NextGen Lite isn't going too carry us into this decade, we'd need a new one entirely if we were going to do it. There's no point in only going halfway.

 

I designed half a theme as well, there was a fun rank up for grabs last time so If a reward is given out I'm sure you'd have people participating.

No one said anything about coding... I said design. You'd think a programmer would know the difference. You don't need to know how vB works, or know how the mods work to be able to design a theme.

A one-page forum theme to get an idea takes maybe an hour or two.

Site itself does need an overhaul and personally I think that we need a new logo and maybe background as the ones voted by the majority weren't that great from a design perspective (logos are better when they are simple - like alt's ones).

If another contest was held, it should be up to those with design experience or staff or something like that to judge the winner instead of just leaving it up to the public as there was clearly a large discrepancy in those voting - being asked to vote, new accounts being made to vote, new vading accounts made to vote, etc. These need to be accounted for also.

 

Maybe you need to post your vote and have a restriction like maybe you need to be a member for a year or more, this would prevent mass account registration. No offense but if the competition was legitimate, the current background/header would not have won. We're not a shitty guild site.

 

Maybe but even then I could imagine a lot of asking people to vote for their own designs & bribery etc to occur. Two fun ranks were on the line and I could imagine several people paying a bit of money to get them - case and point people are willing to pay $5 for SVU which looks bad

 

Whatever happened to vb4 anyways?

 

I remember reading the thread. Something about vb4's vast errors etc, lots of time would be needed to be put in, we don't need the extra figures, added cost etc

It seems we have people who have already put the time in to create a theme, but we're not using them. Why's that?

 

Because its ugly lol. we need more to choose from.

 

perhaps there should be a vote pool where people can show their art work of their new theme's and whoever gets the most vote will get he's/her theme on sythe
