    Colonizing Mars

Not sure if a lot of people have heard about this but I think it's pretty cool. Basically, in a decade's time they're going to host a reality show where applicants compete for the prize of getting to live on mars. Once they get to mars they'll set up a self-sustainable environment and spend the rest their life there. Every couple years another group will be sent to mars as well. The funding to do this will mainly come from the reality show.

So what do you think of humans living on mars? If you had the choice of living on mars for the rest of your life would you do it? Yeah it sounds like it'd suck but you'd make history as being the first human to settle outside of earth.

Anyways, here's the article explaining it a bit better:

    Colonizing Mars

This thread has been brought up so many times, but the reality show part hasn't. All i got to say is good luck to anyone who wants to live on mars with 3 other strangers. Not to mention all the worries of food, water, shelter, air, your other team members going insane. I would never leave earth to go to mars, especially since it's not populated with anything. They cant farm, cant raise livestock, where/how are they going to produce water? The factors to sustain life are not their. I'm sorry to inform you, but I doubt this will ever go through. Maybe they will have enough money for the first trip up there from all the views they would get, But once people watch it once are most of them going to watch the same thing again? Then think about if the show gets cancelled? There's no way back. Are the producers going to watch over them?

I don't know if I would even support this idea.

We're in the very early stages of space travel and have barely left our planet yet. I think a reality TV show on Mars should be the last of our concerns.

Exactly, I can also see a case of cannibalization occurring, hahaha.
The reality show is is funding it? They must be on some crazy shit if that's what's going down you'd need massive financial support.

Some other dude can claim history, I enjoy it here in England, Mars is overrated .

It's just a giant rock that possibly once had water. I have water in my kitchen.

    My kitchen > Mars.

The reality show idea is far fetched... the space program costs billions. No reality show will pay for interplanetary travel.

Well is 10 years a long time when it comes to space travel innovation? Maybe by that point we'll have invented cheaper alternatives. I agree that sounds a bit far-fetched which is why I think it'd be pretty cool if they could pull it off and if the people could actually survive.

Food, water and shelter aren't the problem, it's the fact that mars does NOT have breathable air, you'd be constantly isolated in a tent or some kind of house. How boring.. Honestly, good luck to who ever does it, clearly for the "fame" or some kind of suicidal whack jobs.

If the air was fine, I wouldn't mind, actually I'd love to go if it was actually possible to maintain life on that planet.
Why people are still trying to move us off this earth instead of improving the one planet that's stable enough for us already, I'll never know.

They would obviously wear spacesuits if they were to venture outside. But still the radiation levels would be extremely high and it would be freezing. The low amount of gravity would mean that their muscles and bones will deteriorate, therefore they would never be able to return to Earth.

Water and food would be the least of their troubles. Water can easily be produced by fuel cells and food can be brought in the form of MREs or grown in special conditions.

You'd also make history for being one of the guinea pigs >.>

I think we should stop shitting all over the earth before we begin populating another planet.

Eventually it will happen, most likely not in years. But 10 years is a long time.
Look how the world has changed in 10 years, things could happen.

Earth won't be around forever; sustaining life on other planets is the only way for the human species to survive.

I would probably watch this show.

If I didn't have any prior obligations or personal connections with people, I would have signed up for Marsone, or whatever it's called.

That's never going to happen in a humans life time though, there is only so much we can do, not to mention the air on that planet isn't even breathable, what now? Constantly sending oxygen tanks and suits up there and then what happens when it all runs out?
Why not fix the ONE planet we CAN live on instead of worrying about others.

Well eventually Earth is going to run out of resources at the rate things are going now. Even if we learn not to wreck the planet we live on, the sun will collapse in a few billion years anyways. We are going to have to move eventually we might as well start learning now.
