Liberty reserve is a virtual currency. You don't have $1000 US dollars you have $1000 LR dollars. The site required third parties to exchange LRDs to USD but now LRDs will be seen as worthless. Even if the LRDs are released (which would require the site to return in full) no one will want them. Anyone with LRDs is out of luck, sorry.

 

The US has seized a ton of assets from the LR founders, and exchangers. Remember that any LR USD that has been purchased was paid for with real money. LR USD was not created like Bit Coins being mined, it was purchased 100% of the time for the exact value + fees. These same exchangers were more than willing to buy LR at its face value as well (minus their fee).

To say there is no backing behind LR is silly. e-Gold is the most comparable company to LR, and it is finally repaying legitimate customers (albeit ~5 years later).

The DOJ has already announced that it intends to repay legitimate users.
