how to delete all songs from an iphone 4

Hello, I have a problem right now with my iphone 4. I have deleted all the songs on my iphone, but all the songs i deleted are still visible in the music section of my iphone. They are just grayed out and cant be clicked on. So whenever i plug my iphone into the cpu to download new music, it first starts with a "sync" where it just re downloads all the songs from my library that i deleted from my ihpone. So basically I cant add any new music without adding all the music in my library. I cant figure out how to stop it from syncing all the songs automatically so that i can put certain ones on there. does this make sense? please help!
