I want to travel the world, some help would be great!

I've been active on this site for as long as i could remember, but i never really got round to registering, and i'm sorry for that.

I'm 19, and live up in the north, I have a job, a future, but it's not what i want. I want to travel the world, experience what it's like to travel without money, stress, no care in the world. This will happen, whether it's next month, or 6 months time. But there's still quite alot i'm unsure of.

What should I buy before i do this, any ideas?, Any guides-like that anyone could provide me on how to live off the 'earth' so-to-speak. This is a serious milestone in my life that i'm going to do, so please, don't take this as a joke.

I've not really gave you guys much of a question apart from the one above, but some incite, or advice would be great.

That's very difficult to pull off.

However, I do know people who are in the exact same situation as you. They were young, had a steady, decently paid job and decided to travel around the world, some for the heck of it and others because they truly wanted to experience something new.

Whatever happens, you will always need money and "living off the earth" isn't practical for someone travelling.

What those people I know did was work temporary, minimum wage odd jobs on their journeys, be it working in a bar or on a farm.

If you're lucky, you might find that when in poorer countries, people are more welcoming and will be more likely to open their homes to you or share what food they have (ironic, I know) so you could potentially subsist that way.

Whatever happens, good luck and don't do anything stupid .

 

You could go live in the middle of no where somewhere and live off the land. You'll be classed as crazy but you won't rely on money really. Traveling without money is very difficult and cannot see ways around it unless you go like survivor man style or something.

 

You could always buy a cheap van, save up for one with your current job and that way you won't need to pay for hotels because I know some hotels cost a fortune just for 1/2 nights.
Are you sure it's really what you want to do though and not just a spare of the moment thing? If you have a future I would wait until you're in a secure job and you have something to come home to, but if you're 100% sure about it then I would do as I suggest above, unless you want to go outside your country to travel.

 

i always heard that the navy allows you to travel and get paid for it so maybe you might even want to consider that path? You get the Navy under your belt as well as traveling and money.

 

Ohmygod, why didn't I think to suggest this, this is so true!
My father was in the Navy for 9 years and he traveled all over the world, it's an amazing experience, while you're on the boat food is provided free for you, as well as a bed, all you do is roll in the cash and save up.

What countries did your Dad visit??

 

Hawaii, Africa, all around Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand and he went to other places but those are the main ones I remember, it's honestly the best in the Navy, he always has little stories he's telling me and my little brother/cousins. ^_^

I understand what you guys are saying, i suppose i would need money wouldn't i? Well does anyone know how much i would need? Lets say if i hitchhiked most placed, slept in a tent and so on. I don't have a drivers license so i couldn't really get a camper-van. Maybe around ~1Grand? More? Obviously i could try work any jobs along the way, i'm not quite sure how easy that would be, i'm going to make some calls tomorrow. Any ideas?

Edit: And nah, this isn't a spur of the moment thing, I've wanted to do it my whole life!

Kidding! But I would rather go to the Navy than just hitchhiking around the world, you can get lost, no job, have no money and you'll be in a huge mess.

You really don't need any money for the Navy, just some qualifications that are super easy to get!

 

If you do decide to just wander around, you should find a friend to go with. It would be a lot safer, and you'd have someone to fall back on financially

 

Any of you heard of an "Au-Pair"?

 

To travel the world for FREE, with very, VERY little worries...join the Navy for 4 years. Pick an easy as fuck MoS.

Cruise through those 4 years, you'll go to at least 5 countries, and 2 continents. Wanna continue your endeavor? 4 more years.

Why?

1) You're getting exactly what you want, to travel and see the world at no expense and without much care in the world - just livin' with people you'll grow to consider your goddamn closest friends/FAMILY.
2) Building a military background - you come home after your exploration, BOOM, jobs, JOBS EVERYWHERE for you!

Be wise, do somethin' along those lines, bro. Trust me.

 

A buddy of mine actually back packed through Europe for a year. He saved up some cash and went off. He would sleep in Catholic convents for free. If you let them know you're a traveler you get a room for a night or two, then anything more can be paid for extremely cheap.

he started to get short on cash, he would offer tour guide services or translations. He's fluent in Spanish and English, so it helped him while he traveled Spain and Portugal (even though he didn't speak Portuguese, he got by as a tour guide.)

Just some small tips to keep in mind. I would definitely consider picking up a language before heading over
