How do you truly know if someone is attempting to scam you? What is something to look out for ? If someone is really really new to this like 5 or 10 posts is that a red flag?

The best advice i can give you is use a middleman. EVERY time. I've been in that situation many times and thought "hey i'll save a little bit and not use a middleman, i'm sure it'll be fine!" I nearly always regret that decision. Although it's not 100% safe still, but i guarantee it's worth it! If a user says that they don't want to use a MM then I'd say there's a fair chance that they are attempting to scam you...(unless you are trying to get them to pay, then that might be the reason :p).

I'd also suggest that if you are selling things, don't take payment via paypal unless they are trusted!

    Hope this helps! :)

If you ask to use a trusted free MM/OMM and they refuse.

Post count doesn't really have anything to do with it...

But shouldnt post count atleast give some sort of indication that someone can literally just make an account scam and then be like "ehh who cares?"

Trading online is so difficult, i think the MM idea is my best bet.

Look at recent posts and threads started. See if they're active in a certain forums. That's really the only thing i can see mattering in the post count category. If someone is more into the community i guess i would consider them a little more trustworthy. Ex. would be A$AP or Elena.

It's really your judgement, i suggest that you never swap accounts though. that always ends up in a scam. Unless the person is very trusted and i mean very.

Yeah, I agree with Woodcut, read a few of their recent posts, just use your common sense really, if it doesn't feel right don't go through with it.

Post count honestly doesn't mean anything. Use a middleman and always check for imposters. Avoid PayPal with new users if you can.

Example of post count not meaning anything - http://www.sythe.org/members/57329-pen.html

It should just be common sense to you, unless you're gullible. And no, Post counts do not count. I actually feel insulted and get a little angry when people don't trust me with Paypal, but it's understandable. I would listen to Laptop65 and try to avoid using paypal with anybody really due to chargebacks if you want to be more safe.

Check the quality of their vouches, see they are recent/quality/of a higher value than your transaction

Hey Him! I don't deal in the market section anymore due to the high amount of scammers on Sythe, but here's some things I've learned over the years of being on Sythe when participating in the market:

    • Post Count/Join Date - Although post count shouldn't be the deciding factor when deciding whether or not to trade with an individual, it should be considered. There's two things to look at when considering a user's post count; A.) The quality of the member's posts: Whether or not their posts are long, descriptive, and consumed some time to create - or if they are simple "yes" and "lol that's funny! sick bro!" type of posts, that help them farm posts to seem like they are more active and trustful. B.) Posts per day/Join Date: Determining how long ago the member joined, and how often they post daily allows you to accumulate some sort of general idea of how dedicated the person is to the Sythe community, and not so much as getting their posts up.
    • Vouches* - Very important in all trades. I am not saying members who have very few or no vouches at all are not trustworthy - it is possible to conduct trades with these members. However, I would not trade any significant amounts with these members, and I would not go first under any circumstances (assuming you are more trusted - and you can prove it). *Vouches is a system used to record how many successful trades a member has conducted. This does not mean the member is 100% trustful - there are and have been extremely trusted users and staff alike, who have scammed members of Sythe for large portions of money. Do not let your guard down based on vouches.
    • Verification - Always make sure you know who you're talking to. Get as many confirmations from the person you're trading with saying they are who they say they are through Skype, PMs, and whatever other methods of contact you may be using.
    • Market Tools - The market tools are a valuable asset to anybody interested in trading on Sythe. I highly suggest using these free (and some paid) tools that may be the difference between a successful and unsuccessful trade. The market tools include;
      • Market Discussion - Used to discuss different variables of the market, and to assist members with questions (Ideally, this thread that you have posted should be located in the Market Discussion section).
      • Price Checks - Used to ask for the opinions of other Sythe members on the value of what you're interested in selling.
      • Middleman Forums - Used as arbitrators for parties when conducting trades. Probably the most resourceful section out of the Market Tools forum.
      • Vouches Forum - Section where members may record their vouches; Any member you are interested in trading with should give you a link to their vouch thread almost immediately if it is not already on their thread.
      • Report A Scammer - Always look in this section before trading, as some users go on binge scamming, where once they scam they decide to go "balls deep" and attempt to scam as many members as possible before being banned.
    • Common Sense - Go with your gut! If something doesn't seem right, then walk away from the trade - it's always better to be safe than sorry. If a member is conveying incorrect information to you, taking an extremely long time to trade, or is in a rush to get the trade over with - let them know you simply won't trade because you feel uncomfortable.

Well, good luck with everything my man. Hopefully you're one of the few who never get scammed on Sythe :embar: !
