Internet Speeds

Absolutely atrocious internet speeds..

The screenshot above is the speed that I'm getting from my wifi connection from upstairs, its only slightly faster plugged in.





I live kind of in the hills and we're currently using shitty at&t dsl.

My questions:

1)My dad did some research and decided that there wasn't a faster alternative, is he correct? How would I go about looking for a better alternative?

2)I'm seriously lost, what can I do? Should I call someone out to look at it?

3) Should we get a faster/better modem/router? Would that actually help? I would expect it to but obviously we're having some kind of other issue

This looks like its available on our area, could boost us from 6mbps max to 18.. Looking for a better option though

re-edit: I've seen some decent plans out there, really hard to find anything decent in our area though :/

 

Contact your provider and ask them.
I was getting about 0.5-1 meg and I contacted my provider and complained and what not. Well they gave me a new router and upped are speed to 60-100mb/s (more people on it tends to lower it to 60, but with just me it's usually 100.)

But yeah... Anyway... Your provider will know whats best

Would you suggest that I also upgrade to u-verse? (linked in the op) - it has to be better than dsl right? :/

I am not sure what U-Verse runs on - but any cable provider (like Optimum/FiOS?) are more ideal - they can handle a higher amount of bandwidth and provide optimal services over DSL.

Now the downsides are that it's more expensive... and the companies can be a bitch to deal with. We had trouble with our provider for a while - had to call them multiple times, swap out modems, etc., until they fixed the problem.

 

I'll run a quick search on Optimum/FiOS and see what I can come up with. U-verse is at&t's cable service.
edit: Optimum offers slower speeds than u-verse and FiOS looks really nice but not available in my area :/

Price isn't really a worry, I'd sell my siblings if it meant faster internet

new question though, how are people getting these 50mbps+ download speeds? I guess they're just fortunate enough to have it offered in their area :/

Gave your provider a call yet? Best thing to do is give them a call.

 

U-Verse would be your best option out of everything I guess if Optimum and FiOS are not offered in your area. Optimum is by far the best (at least in my opinion) - they offer a stable internet service with relatively high speeds (if you get the boost/boost plus service). If you go for U-Verse you will more than likely have to go for their Pro plan as it offers you the fastest speeds.

The "Up to" 50mbps+ DL speeds is known as Optimum Boost Plus (or something like that) and is actually offered around me - I believe it's the service run at my house but not sure. The most we see in reality is ~30mbps down and 10-12 Up.

Then there is the next step above Boost Plus - Known as Optimum Online Ultra which is their top-tiered service. "Available to all our customers, connection speeds up to 101 Mbps downstream and 15 Mbps upstream give you the power to download: " The service costs a LOT more than the Boost Plus and frankly isn't worth it.

 

Looks as bad as my old houses DSL. Now I'm pushin like 30-50 megs.

 

Honestly I think i'm just shit outta luck. I tried to upgrade to u-verse which the website says is available in my area but they told me that it isn't on the phone. Then I asked about dsl and they said that 1.5mb is the MAX they offer in my area ._.

I've been looking at like satellite stuff which is at least 10mbps..but it looks like there are download limits and its really expensive :/

ATT uverse is shit.

This is from personal experience.

 

They pay out the ass for those speeds. I get 100 mbps down, 20mbps up, and pay $155/month for internet+TV

 

I'll pay anything honestly. I'm just finding it hard to believe that the FASTEST internet in my area is 1.5mbps DSL :/...

Can't seem to find fiber optic in my area + satellite plans don't tend to be unlimited so I suppose I'm out of options :/

 

I had the same trouble as you I wanted super fast internet.
But, where I live I can't get 3G on a wifi connection but on my phone it
barely reaches past 2 bars so I use my blackberry for internet.

My old house I used to leech off of my neighbours internet *He was okay
with it* and It went super fast like it would download 1gig in no time
and he was paying around $200/AU per month for unlimited which I'd
pay half of it. You should ring up your provider and talk about the kind
of area you're in and whether or not it >IS< possible to get faster net.

 

My internet speed is even slower lol. 1mb down and .5 up.. on a good day. I connect to this satellite on top of my neighbor's barn down the road. It's absolute shit during storms.
Anyways, I don't think changing up your hardware; router, modem etc, is going to do much. You are cursed with slow internet. I also wouldn't recommend getting satellite internet.. you will use your bandwidth very quickly. Speaking from past experiences..
Are there any cable companies around?

 

Have you tried upgrading to broadband? I was on crappy verizon internet until I searched the internet and found a local provider that offered 6mb/s down and 1.5mb/s up which was a huge improvement for me.

 

There are like two broadband providers here but it'd only be 500 kbps faster and cost 5x as much :/
