    So what's this "item system"?

The whole item system is completely revamped; each item have attributes, condition, owner, etc. I highly recommend you read this guide, Rachael spent a lot of time working on this new system and it would explain a lot, as well as help you with the server.

    Rachael's marvelous guide to Attributes

    What are Attributes?
Attributes are special properties that can be found on your equipment. Any piece of equipment can have up to two different attributes.
Attributes produce special effects, usually on a fairly small scale, or with a low chance of occurring.

    How do Attributes work?
Attributes are divided into categories of which equipment slots they can be assigned to. The categories are as follows:

    Weapons
    Shields
    Armour (Headgear, Bodywear, Legwear)
    Limbs (Gloves, Boots, Capes)
    Jewellery (Amulets & Rings)

For example, Death sentence Lv. 3 is a Weapon attribute . Therefore, it can only be found on weapons; like a Dragon scimitar.
In contrast, XP plus Lv. 1 is a Jewellery attribute. This means if can be found on both amulets, and rings.

Note that any two attributes of the same name do not stack with each other.
For example, Armour attributes encompass three different equipment slots. Meaning it's possible to have attributes of the same name on different pieces of equipment, but at the same time. Such as:

A Rune full helm with the HP plus Lv. 2 attribute
A Rune platebody with the HP plus Lv. 1 attribute
Rune platelegs with HP plus Lv. 3 attribute

Of course, it's possible for a player to wear all three of these pieces of equipment at once. However, only one instance of the HP plus attribute would be accounted for; the other two would be ignored.
Attributes work in such a way that the lowest level variation of the attribute is considered first. So in this case, only the Rune platebody's HP plus Lv. 1 would be prevalent.
Because of this, it's important to make sure you aren't crippling yourself by mixing up same-name attributes.

How do I get Attributes on my items?
There are currently two ways of getting equipment with attributes:

    Find them as a drop
Create the item using a skill
    Use an Attribute modifier

It's no secret that enemies drop items when they're killed. When they drop equipment, that equipment has a chance of bearing one random attribute. Obviously, the random attribute is assigned accordingly with the equipment's category - so you'd never end up
finding a Korasi's sword (weapon) with the Reflexes attribute (armour), for example.
Sometimes, finished items you make using skills such as Smithing, or Crafting, will have a random attribute.

Attribute modifiers are a special item that allow you to change, or add-to the attributes of your own equipment by choice. Attribute modifiers, like equipment are found with one attribute of their own - which is what would be used to change the attribute of your targeted equipment.
For example, an Attribute modifier with the Adrenaline Lv. 3 attribute could be used to on a Dragon longsword to pass on that attribute. The modifier is consumed upon usage, so make such decisions carefully.
There are a few rules to keep in mind when using Attribute modifiers:

You can't give an item a new attribute with the same name as one it already has
If an item already has two attributes, you cannot add any new ones, or remove them
You can use an Attribute modifier to upgrade an attribute of the same name
The target item must fall into the same category as the attribute being passed on

Now, an example to help understand these rules. Let's say you have this item:

Here are some Attribute modifiers you would, and would not be able to use on it:

Iai blow Lv. 1 (Already has a superior variation)
Reflexes Lv. 2 (Armour attribute, not compatible with weapons)
Assassin Lv. 2 (Already has it)
Assassin Lv. 3 (Would replace Assassin Lv. 2)
Adrenaline Lv. 3 (No space for new attributes)
