3 guests put up for the night at an inn room which costs 30 dollars per night . Each of them gave 10 dollars to the inn keeper.

But after the 3 ppl back to the room, the keeper asked a waiter give 5 dollars back to them because that day was a Preferential Day ( on that day , they offer discount to all guests) .

The waiter kept 2 dollars for himself, and gave each of the 3 guests 1 dollar.

So each of the 3 spent 10-1=9 dollars . And they 3 totally spent 9 *3 =27dollars . The waiter kept 2 dollars. Finally, it's 27 dollars + 2 dollors =29 dollars . But what they gave to inn keeper is 30dollars totally.

Then where is the last 1 dollar?

The inn keeper has the remaining 25$ because he only gave the waiter 5$ out of 30$.

The cost for a room was 25 (5 is originally taken by the waiter), minus 2 for the tip, plus three that is returned.

They each spent $9,that's $27, the keeper has $25 of it, the waiter has $2 of it, its quite the trick question.... But basically, if you overthink the question, you won't understand it. It doesn't add up in the sense if you do 27+2(which is how you try to think of it since you think the question is truly harder than it is), you have to think of it at 25+3+2.

Edit: I GET IT, they all still equally paid, they each spent $9.33 each, that *3 equals 28 + the waiter get $2 for himself which was $.66 from each of them, then they each got a dollar back so they each spent only $8.33 + .66 each for the waiter

So essentially you have to think of them paying for the waiter from the start to understand it. its not 27+2=30, its 27-2=25.

Actually, there is no 1usd left. The formula 3x9+2 is incorrect. The guests got 1 usd back from the 10usd which they paid at the beginning, so they spent 9 usd respectively which totally was 27usd spent. The 27usd includes the 2usd which was kept by waiter. The formula should be like this : 3x9 including the 2usd in waiter's pocket.
