Alright, I know one of these is OBVIOUSLY better, but I'm just curious about the performance difference.
    Operating System: Windows 8
Processor & Memory: Intel i5-3210M Dual Core Processor (3.1GHz); 6GB Memory
Storage & Optical Drive: 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s Hard Drive; Slot-Loading Dual Layer DVD Burner
Display & Design: 14" High Definition LED Display; Stealth Black with Soft Touch Finish; 13.27"W x 10.16:D x 1.49"H; Weighs 6.4 lbs.
    Video/Graphics: 1GB NVIDIA GeForce 650M
Audio/Speakers: Integrated Stereo Speakers; Creative Sound Blaster Recon3Di High-Def 5.1 Audio with THX TruStudio Pro Software
Whatâ¿¿s Included: HD Webcam with Dual Digital Microphones; 82-key Keyboard with AlienFX Lighting Controls
Battery & Connectivity: 8 Cell; WiFi; Bluetooth 4.0
I/O Ports: HDMI 1.4 A/V Output; 2 USB 3.0 Ports; 1 USB 2.0 with PowerShare Technology; VGA; Mini-Display Port; 9-in1 Media Card Reader
    ENERGY STAR Qualified: Yes

    And the second is
    Operating System: Windows 8
Processor & Memory: Intel i7-3630QM Quad Core Processor (3.4GHz); 8GB Memory
Storage & Optical Drive: 750GB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s Hard Drive; Slot-Loading Dual Layer DVD Burner
Display & Design: 14" High Definition LED Display; Stealth Black with Soft Touch Finish; 13.27"W x 10.16:D x 1.49"H; Weighs 6.4 lbs.
Video/Graphics: 2GB NVIDIA GeForce 650M using Optimus Technology
Audio/Speakers: Integrated Stereo Speakers; Creative Sound Blaster Recon3Di High-Def 5.1 Audio with THX TruStudio Pro Software
Includes: HD Webcam with Dual Digital Microphones; 82-key Keyboard with AlienFX Lighting Controls
Battery & Connectivity: 8 Cell; WiFi; Bluetooth 4.0
I/O Ports: HDMI 1.4 A/V Output; 2 USB 3.0 Ports; 1 USB 2.0 with PowerShare Technology; VGA; Mini-Display Port; 9-in1 Media Card Reader
    ENERGY STAR Qualified: Yes

Alright, I know the second one is clearly better. But exactly how much better is it? Would the fps difference be dramatic?

The top one is alright, just it has a dual core processor what is kinda lame and it wouldn't be good for future releases.

    tl'dr get the 2nd one

2nd computer is much meaner than the first. Double video memory, better processor, more RAM. The only thing that would add significantly to the performance is a SSD over a HDD.

You have to remember that a "meaner" computer may not be optimal. If he plans on playing games and consistently has his power cord with him it's fine. But all the extra power in the second computer means it will drain the battery that much faster (unless it disables cores/etc when they're not required). A SSD at 3GB/s will only reduce power consumption and not much else. The random R/Ws are slightly above the 7200RPM drive in his computer and the standard reads are actually slower (I ran tests).

I am 100% utterly aware the second one is better. I know why it is better. I know the graphics card is better, drive is better, processor is better. I just want to know how good the first is in comparison. Could it play Dota 2 at 60 fps max settings? How well could it run GW2? Etc

just a little bit of google magic and...
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-650M.71887.0.html
scroll to the bottom if you don't want to look at / don't understand the specific benchmarks displayed. They give quite a few benchmarks from major games, and it would be able to handle GW2 on low at about 44fps. So it depends on how picky you are about fps and how great your games look. Also if you are willing to overclock your gpu you may be able to bump the fps up some more.
this took me about 2 minutes from reading your thread to finding this by the way.

I appreciate the help. I actually stumbled across that but I read about half way down and assumed it wouldn't tell me what I wanted. Didn't notice the bottom. Thanks. Close this please.

Whats the price difference? and performance-wise You won't really notice a clear difference between the i5 and i7 unless you are really pushing it with gameplay. The 2nd one would be better mainly because of the dedicated 2GB memory for graphics as well as optimus. I had a samsung chronos gaming with optimus and I noticed a huge difference in battery life. FPS difference, on higher settings you will notice it. go with the 2nd one because computers get outdated quickly.

In all technicality, when playing games you're not going to notice ANY difference between the two, UNLESS you're playing a game that utilizes more graphics memory than 1 GB(IE: assassin's creed 3 can use over 1200mb at times). if you find the limits of the 1gb GT650m, you will see a slight drop in FPS. Regardless, your games will stay very playable at good settings, since you're most likely not dealing with 1920x1080p resolutions on that 14" screen anyways...so I highly doubt you will find the limits of that card on the first laptop

The processor is not going to hinder your gaming performance, as very few games are very reliant on your processor. The only one that i can think of right away that is fairly processor dependent is battlefield 3. But the i5 will handle that without problem.

If you want my honest opinion, sure the second one has slightly more capable hardware in terms of overall numbers, but the performance across both of those laptops will be the same when playing games. With that being said, since im sure the first one will cost you less, I would go with that one.

what brand and model laptops are you looking at? I would be curious to look into it further for you just to make sure.

And for what its worth, to the people saying the GPU is meaner or whatever... Having 1gb or 2gb or 4gb makes ZERO difference in GPU performance unless the game requires more than what your GPU has available. What DOES make a difference is in the more technical details of the GPU(core speed, mem speed, shaders, pipelines, bandwidth, Memory type GDDR3 vs GDDR5, and so on.)

Yeah, but you have to ask yourself: if it's incapable of playing games to begin with, is it really worth it?

Number one won't play most modern games. Number two will, even if battery life won't be dramatically long. Then again though, who buys a laptop to play games without a charger?
