    ASAPgang's guide to purchasing/selling a Runescape account!

    ASAPgang's guide to purchasing/selling a RuneScape account

Hey everyone, I'm posting this quick guide as I have recently been scammed by a "semi-trusted" user, and also to prevent any further scams that occur, this guide's purpose is to make you think twice about purchasing an account, unless the user is TRUSTED.

    Contents
1.0 The basics to buying an account
    1.1 Payment options
    1.2 Middleman
1.3 Why you shouldn't purchase an account

    2.0 Selling an account
    2.1 Payment options
    2.2 Middleman
2.3 What is a trusted user

3.0 How you can be scammed when selling an account
    3.1 Chargebacks
    3.2 Not receiving payment

4.0 How you can be scammed when purchasing an account
    4.1 Recovery of account

    5. How to avoid any potential scams

1.0 BASICS TO BUYING AN ACCOUNT
So here I will start with the basics to buying an account on Sythe.org. So, you're looking to purchase an account to avoid the process of training the account yourself? and want to get a kickstart ahead of everyone else? Well, when purchasing account the first steps would be as follows:
    1. Create a thread on the specified sub-forum.
    2. Post detailed information of what sort of account you are after, stats you require, and any other information required in this thread.
    3. People who are interested in selling you an account will most likely add you on that specified form of contact you have provided, whether it be by PM, MSN, Skype.. etc etc.
    4. This is where you will conduct any potential trades with a user who claims to be selling an account.
    5. Go from there.

    1.1 Payment Options
Here is a list of Payment options you have to choose from when purchasing an account, I will then advise on what I myself recommend and why.

I will only advise on what I myself have experience with, I would be more than happy to add in some things if people have had any past experiences with said Payment methods

    In no specific order:
    1. RSGP: this payment method would be the most common (now) as compared to any other method. When purchasing an account using RSGP, I must declare that there is no way for you to retrieve that RSGP if the trade doesn't go as planned. There is a small conflict here; such that, every seller wants to be paid via this method to ensure their security thereafter the trade. And such that, every buyer doesn't want to use this method, to ensure their safety (recovery or dispute of payment) thereafter.
    2. PayPal: this payment method is the most common method to send and receive payments virtually, here on Sythe. When purchasing, this payment method is fairly safe - You have up to 45 days to claim a non receipt dispute if you were not to receive what you had asked for, or the account was recovered back from your possession.
    3. Western Union: This payment method is a safe way to receive payments, but when you have sent a payment using this method, there is no way to get your money back if the seller of the account decides to recover their RuneScape account.
    4. Player Auctions: Please refer to this thread here: http://www.sythe.org/market-discussion/1339121-beginners-guide-sythe-market.html

    5. Bank transfer: Explains itself.

So in conclusion, I believe the safest payment method to use when purchasing an account would be PayPal. This ensures you will most likely have the account for no less than 45 days.

    1.2 Middleman
I would highly recommend this to any newcomers who are looking to purchase an account from a member you do not deem trustworthy, a middleman is someone trustworthy who ensures that both parties get what they are paying for. You can find middlemen HERE: http://www.sythe.org/middleman-forums/

REMEMBER, Even with the use of a middleman, there is always a VERY HIGH POSSIBILITY the account WILL get recovered.

1.3 Why you shouldn't buy an account
From my past experiences, I believe no one should ever buy an account from a seller here at Sythe. In my opinion, no matter WHO you buy it from, WHAT payment method you use, whether or not you use a MiddleMan, The account WILL get recovered back eventually, whether it be within hours - years. You will never be safe when purchasing an account. So if you're up to lose your money, go ahead, purchase an account.

I understand, there are some fairly trustworthy people on Sythe that wouldn't recover the account, but that's not to say they are the original owner etc. There still lies a possibility the account will get recovered.

    2.0 Selling an account
The same process goes for selling an account as it does to buying an account, only flipped around.
    1. Create a thread on the specified sub-forum.
    2. Post detailed information of the account you are selling, stats, log in screen and any other information required in this thread.
    3. People who are interested in buying your account will most likely add you on that specified form of contact you have provided, whether it be by PM, MSN, Skype.. etc etc.
    4. This is where you will conduct any potential trades with a user who claims to be purchasing your account.
    5. Go from there.

    2.1 Payment options
When selling an account here at Sythe, I feel this option is the most un safe form of payment you opt to receive from any potential buyer, a buyer can chargeback their payment and claim they never received the item, or the payment was sent without the owners authorisation.
    3. Western Union: This payment method is a safe way to receive payments, But take into account, if you give the account information first: there is no guarantee your going to receive the money. This is why I would recommend using a MiddleMan to make sure both parties receive what they intended to get.
    4. Player Auctions: Please refer to this thread here: http://www.sythe.org/market-discussion/1339121-beginners-guide-sythe-market.html
    5. Bank transfer: Explains itself.

    2.2 Middleman
I would highly recommend this to any newcomers who are looking to purchase an account from a member you do not deem trustworthy, a middleman is someone trustworthy who ensures that both parties get what they are paying for. You can find middlemen HERE: http://www.sythe.org/middleman-forums/

REMEMBER, Even with the use of a middleman, there is always a VERY HIGH POSSIBILITY the account WILL get recovered.

    2.3What is a trusted user
My personal opinion on a trusted user is as follows:
Someone whom has any form of rank such as, a mod, admin, highly trusted etc. Someone who has enough vouches to back up what they are proclaiming, someone who is an active member within the Sythe forums, someone who has been around a long time. There is a lot to take into account when deeming someone trustworthy, always do background checks on people prior to trading with them, to weed out any potential ban evaders/scammers.
Someone who is a legitimate buyer will not refuse the use of a MiddleMan, but that's not to say that even though they want to use a middleman, that they won't chargeback. Please refer to below section for more information on chargebacks.

3.0 How you can be scammed when selling an account
There are multiple ways one can be scammed when selling account, the most common would be to either not receive payment from said buyer, or to be chargebacked on PayPal.

    3.1 Chargebacks
A chargeback is when a user sends the payment (Usually through PayPal this occurs) and then later on after the transaction is complete and vouched for, the buyer will chargeback his money, leaving you with nothing in PayPal. This is a very common scam, so please beware.
How a chargeback occurs is as follows: Once the transaction is completed, you receive your payment and the other user receives their account, within 45 days of payment being sent via PayPal, the person who sent the money has the opportunity to claim either:
    A) Non Receipt dispute: Claiming they never received said item. To avoid this, I would take any potential proof screenshots required to defend against this case. Usually if they claim non-receipt and you mention "Virtual Goods" the seller, will most likely come better off.
    B) Unauthorized claim: Claiming they never sent the payment themselves, and someone done so without the authorization and consent of the owner of the PayPal account, there is no way around this if the IP's don't match. So please be aware of this type of scam.

    3.2 Not receiving payment
This is simple, and the title speaks for itself. You give the information without use of a middleman, and you do not receive agreed payment.
This scenario usually occurs when you don't use a middleman, or you decide to go first to someone you deem trustworthy, when really they aren't. My advice is to be very weary when selling an account to another member who refuses the use of a trusted MM, if they decline use of an OMM, do not trade. There is no rush when selling your account, take your time and do some research!

4.0 How you can be scammed when purchasing an account
Here I will list any potential ways you may be scammed when purchasing an account.
    4.1 Recovery of account
This is the most common scam, and from my experience within this industry it IS GOING TO HAPPEN I cannot express this more. NO MATTER WHO you purchase an account from THE POSSIBILITY OF IT GETTING RECOVERED ARE SUBSTANTIALLY HIGH. This usually occurs after the seller has received their payment, whether or not you use a MiddleMan. THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN.

5.0 How to avoid any potential scams
ALWAYS USE A MIDDLEMAN, ALWAYS PURCHASE FROM SOMEONE TRUSTED, USE SAFE AND SECURE PAYMENT METHODS, READ ANY GUIDES.

IN CONCLUSION, I WOULD STRONGLY SUGGEST TO ANYONE CONTEMPLATING PURCHASING AN ACCOUNT HERE AT SYTHE, TO CHANGE THEIR MIND! DO NOT PURCHASE AN ACCOUNT UNLESS THE ACCOUNT IS FROM A VERY, AND I MEAN VERY, REPUTABLE MEMBER!

    Additional information:

You can perform an IP check here; http://www.sythe.org/userlookup.php, although this may not be 100% certain, so do not rely solely on this to determine the person you are talking to is legit.

Always take your time when purchasing an account, there is NEVER a rush!

Thanks for the guide! It's a shame that the $200 you lost from the recovered account purchase motivated you to write this guide though :(

What matters is that he did something with that motivation, in a positive way. He could have gone for scamming somebody else too, as many people seem to do ;)

Great guide, good that you wrote it, this will prevent other people from getting scammed!

Thanks for the positive feedback guys, I will be adding more information to this as time proceeds. I believe if I wasn't scammed for $200 I probably wouldn't of had the motivation to write this guide. But knowing how mch it sucks to lose your hard earned money that one works for, I wanted to prevent anyone else going through the same thing.

    ASAPgang's guide to purchasing/selling a Runescape account!

Informative, I've been scammed before and it blows hard. But i wouldn't discourage anyone from buying/selling account on sythe, Ive seen very tusted people scam before and its sad.A lot of people make accounts with the sole purpose of selling such as the 99 RC/thieve accounts. MY only suggestion is maybe add in something about player auctions

It's a sad situation isn't it? and there's nothing you can do about it. I mean getting the person banned is a plus side.. but the money/time you lose and waste is unrecoverable in some scenarios. Thanks for the feedback man!
