I use C4D and Photoshop as do just about all others in the gfx marketplace. Just experiment and see what works out best for you.

If you're referring to text signatures, start off by getting a high quality lightroom. I suggest if you actually want to learn something look up some tutorials on how to make them yourself, but if you want to just download one there's plenty of those on YouTube as well.
Once you've rendered the text you can see where the light is directing. Add in a gradient map with soft colors directing the same way as the lighting set to overlay or soft light. When adding in fractals, and light effects try to incorporate them with the current lighting, so don't just play them randomly try to make them flow so to say.

I personally don't think lightrooms are that important. I never used a lightroom in any of my projects. My suggestion would be to add as many omni-lights as your computer can handle (just don't go crazy with this), place carefully each one of them in places you think will look cool, play a bit with the shadow effects you get and work around that. Then you render and make the color edits, add some lights, play with the layer modes (or wathever it's called on photoshop)... It's all about experience. Your first sigs will look flat and boring, but with time you'll feel like exploring more the resources of the softwares, and then you will start to improve. =)

Your message got me thinking as I often wonder the same question as the OP, Do YOU personally make your own light rooms? or do you create them? Also this has gotten me completely confused, you say "high quality lightroom" does that mean I have to download Adobe LightRoom? I'm so confused. (if the way I used light room in that sentence was incorrect, pardon me, not a word I come across often)

No downloading adobe Lightroom will not be necessary. What I mean by a Lightroom is a C4D room that you made/downloaded that has proper lighting in place. High quality light rooms can consist of the lighting features C4D has to offer such as soft boxes, soft lit orbs, and the normal lights etc. I usually expirement with soft boxes and orbs when creating a Lightroom. If you need help I can gladly link you to some tutorials :)

You can also do things with layers and fading or blending...., along with lens flare.

yeah in photoshop you can use a soft brush an then set the layer mode to overlay. like if you need it to look a bit more sunny outside just add a bit of yellow to the appropriate places an then switch the layer mode to overlay an lower the opacity to your likings.
