Has anyone taken the first Organic Chemistry series? I'm wondering what people experiences have been. (For that, or curiosity sake the 500 level ones.) I heard it is extremely difficult and, considering I just got a C in Bio 222 I need to step my game up!

I just bought a book called "Pushing Electrons" and am already studying up for next fall :p\

    Thanks you guys!

I'm curious about this too. I took Chem 1A last fall, and am currently taking Chem 1B and Biology 1A this semester. Chem 1A was on the hardish side towards the end and I'm am surprisingly excelling in Biology.

I will be taking ORG next semester since I'm planning to major in the biochemistry field. I heard that it is VERY difficult and honestly thinking about it makes me want to change paths and major in something else...

But cool, someone else on this forum will be taking the same class as me at the same time lol

I'm not talking about gen chem. That stuff is very easy.
If you're doing a science major, many sophomores take an ochem series and I've heard it's rather difficult.

There aren't many that would inspire one to take an ochem class, what are you majoring in?

When I was in college, I actually took premed courses, even though I was a computer engineering major. Here's the difference I noticed between both:

For premed, you need to know a lot of information, but there's not much analysis.

For engineering, you don't need to know a lot of information, but you need to be smart enough to manipulate what you do know.

So imagine it like this - an engineer is a computer with a small hard drive but a beast CPU, whilst a med student is a computer with a huge hard drive but a mediocre CPU.

Anyway, I digress. I took organic, I found it easy. It's one of those things where if you study well, you will get a good grade. Nothing like the electrical engineering courses I, unfortunately, had to take, where you study, do problems, etc. and in the end you may get a problem on the exam which you cannot solve.

I have taken it. Can't really get into details right now, but it requires a lot of time and effort. You literally have to go through a few different scenarios for the same beginning item and think of how you would get from Part A to Part B,C,D,etc.

Organic Chemistry, no matter what anyone says takes a lot of time and effort. Also, it's normally better to have a professor that if you ask a question they won't turn to you and say "Shut Up" or "ask at another time". They will invest their time and explain what you need answered. With a strong teacher and investing a good 10+hrs a week into Organic II, I still only pulled off a grade of "C". There is a lot that goes into what you need to know - Mechanics, Electronegativities of Elements, Bond Strength, and about 12 other things.

Organic Chemistry is based on CNOH (elements). If I remember correctly, Organic I (at least in my school) was learning how to name the structures, define rings, and a few other things. If I have the notes I will give you a general idea of what we did in our school.

If you have any questions Sypherz, feel free to PM me.

Sorry about the delay. Was stuck in bed yesterday.

Here is what we covered during our Organic I semester:

You can look up almost all of it online, but it will take some time for me to find my notes. Still trying to get rid of a headache and making sure that my whole body is functioning properly. >_<
