    Sprained ankle recovery

two weeks ago i severely sprained my ankle playing basketball and i went to the hospital and my physician told me i almost broke it. so i've been rehabbing it for two straight weeks and i'm returning to work tomorrow. i can walk on it without any pain so i'm not worried about that.

this weekend i've started strengthening it. when can i resume working out? i'm more than overweight (6'3", 325-330 lbs) but before i sprained it i worked out six days a week (doing insanity along playing on a local basketball league/and practicing) and i was shedding a few good pounds. over my rehab i've been sitting in bed literally every single day i've been home and obviously could not work out (and i've been eating garbage so i'm going to have fun working that shit off). i'm thinking i can do slow movement/low impact exercises like pushups and some yoga.

    any tips?

It's best if you wait until your physiotherapist gives the okay. I've had a friend that badly sprained his ankle playing basketball in gym class as well and his ankle took longer than 2 weeks to heal perfectly. Seeing as you want to get back into doing insanity, you would need to use your ankle a lot and I say not to go too hard on it for now. If I were you, I would see it for myself. Do you think you can do it? Does it hurt when doing basic running or a little insanity workout? If it doesn't, I would get back into it but it's really you that can tell if you can or not. Your physiotherapist will for sure say no until x number of weeks which is longer than 2 weeks definitely.

thank you both for your help and input. in just two days it's healed tremendously and can shoot around my basketball (not too vigorous though). by the middle of next week i should be ready to continue my workout regimen and get back to basketball practice.

Sorry to hear you sprained your ankle. I also am a basketball player, and I would suggest before you start playing that you stretch heavily. Before my games, or random pick up games at the gym, I would Ice my knees and stretch and jog for about five minutes to get warm, etc.
