You have two eyes, each composed of 130,000,000 photoreceptor cells. In each one of those cells, there are 100,000,000,000,000 atoms. (That's more atoms than there are stars in the Milky Way galaxy.) However, each atom in each cell in each eye formed in the core of a star, billions of years ago, and yet, here they are today, being utilized to capture the energy released from that same process...All to expand the consciousness that is you..

The universe has an interesting sense of irony, in that, you are the universe experiencing itself. All you are is a thought.

    Depressing, and amazing, isn't it?

*: Real is being used the way it is defined by the average person; something that we can reach with one of the senses of the mind.

In the process of extending this thesis, and perhaps making a book of it.

    Thoughts?

    I'm not convinced.

These are just big numbers, they don't mean anything.

Don't downplay consciousness to atoms. Read upon the emergent property.

Let's assume that I'm a conscious being. Now, let's assume I get a child. Essentially, this child is made of my atoms. Does that mean that this child doesn't have his/her own unique consciousness? After all, his/her atoms did originate from me. Hence, his/her consciousness is in fact my consciousness? I don't think so.

Just because we're made from the universe's atoms, doesn't mean we are simply "tools" for the universe to experience itself (reminds me of Hegelian philosophy). We would also have to assume that the universe can "experience" in the first place - something that's definitely not supported by scientific evidence.

Again, I doubt the universe can "experience" things in the sense as we do. Consciousness is unique to life and life only. We don't have proof, nor adequate evidence, that it exists elsewhere.

    You'll probably find people interested.

They would disagree with your initial premise though, that all atoms come from the core of a star.

The moment you start telling me what happened 3 minutes after the Big Bang, the moment I stop listening. No one knows how the universe was created, and it's reasonable for me to say that we'll never know, ESPECIALLY the finer details. On paper, we "know" more about how our universe was created (something that occurred, according to scientists, nearly 14 billion years ago) than we do about marine life in Earth's oceans (something that's right next to us). To me, that sounds ridiculous. Theories in astronomy are always subject to "paradigm shifts" - much more than the other sciences. What may seem like a viable model for the creation of the universe today (the Big Bang) may be thrown out tomorrow in favor of another theory.

    Edit:

Oh, and for the record, to say that we're made of atoms from the universe is not really getting us anywhere - the universe means everything in existence. Of course we're made from atoms of the totality of existence. But concluding, based on this, that reality isn't "real" is, in my opinion, flawed.

So you are saying that since we are simply atoms/matter that somehow takes away from our individual consciousness? Cool, we may be the process of natural means but that in no way makes this "less real".

We are the universe experiencing itself doesn't mean that we don't exist.

The term "real", in your opinion, is determined by our consciousnesses. A universe without life and only rocks would still be real.

I was going to give him a speech. But that pretty much sums up what I would have said.

I agree in some ways. Reality is subjective, it's something everyone/everything perceives differently. It's real, but theres no such thing as "a reality".

Reality, not the perceptions of it.

so there's no need to discern between what's real and what isn't?
