Well, for strategy games I like Warzone 2100. It's pretty boss and you can edit and customize anything you like. It isn't an MMO, but if you configure the game properly, you can play on other people's servers or against other people.. Takes a bit of technical knowledge though.

For a PC FPS that's just good to bullshit an hour or so, try Offensive Combat. It doesn't look like much but it's good enough to keep you entertained for a bit should you get interested in it and can look past them constantly trying to get money from you.

I've been into simulator games recently, but shitty ones. Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, Sim City 4, The Sims 3, Airport Tycoon, and the like. You can get them online for free (PM if you're interested), and they really are great and addicting games. You won't find it hard to lose a whole afternoon in one of them.

You could always give some FPS campaigns a try.. I have Battlefield 3 on my PC, but I can't play multiplayer so I just bullshit around the campaign. COD MW3 has survival mode too.

You can grab Skyrim also. That's a very fun semi-open-ended RPG thing. If you get it on the PC, you can (like any pc game) edit anything you like about it. They have some really cool mods and progressing through the game is as easy or hard as you want it to be since you can just advance levels...

If you want a PC Arcade Multiplayer FPS that you can play for ten minutes or so at a time and be on the same level as those who have played for days, try Begone on NPlay.com. The game doesn't give you anything for finishing a round except the satisfaction of winning. There are quite a few people that play, so you won't be running into the same people every game. I really can't explain the game because it would make it sound shitty, but in reality, it's a very fun game and it gets competitive. (also, people who play this game generally aren't very good at PC FPS games, so if you have experience with them, you'll own.)

There's another game I used to play called Sauerbraten. Now, I'm not aware if it's still around but it is also an arcade FPS. Great game and extraordinarily fast paced. There's multiplayer and single player modes where you can set up AI characters to fight against. It was one of my favorite games for a while... Nothin like running around with a quad barrel shotgun.
