Graffiti, art or vandalism?

So, is graffiti a modern day art form, or simply an act of vandalism, if you believe it's art, who's your favorite graffiti artist? If not, why?
I love graffiti, and am a firm believer that its an amazing miser art form, And like the work of ces53 the most

 

Long story short: its vandalism.

I used to do alittle graff but had no talent so i stopped. It can be some really intricate shit though.

 

If you used to do some, why did you come to the conclusion it was vandalism, I'm not criticising just curious as to why you came to this conclusion, what sort did you used to do a bit of? Tags, images, spray? Virtual?

Yeah I think you are completely right. And I think that is exactly what gives people the argument that it is vandalism, because people squiggle meaningless rubbish with spray paint and call it graffiti

 

I really do like some Graffiti. I do find it art.
But bottom line, it is vandalism. So I will call it vandalism, although I do like some of the graffiti I see.

 

What about artist like banksy who's art sells for thousands, would you still class it as vandalism? Again I'm not criticizing just love hearing people opinions

 

You're spray painting on another person's property. It's not legally yours. Therefore, it's vandalism.

I still did it knowing it was vandalism, i just didn't care. I did mostly tags and murals of the name acid and mime.

 

Vandalism if it's not your property, if it is, art 100%

 

Yeah fair point, it's nearly always on others property, what do you think of banksy? If he sprays his work on someone else's property do you still view it as vandalism?

 

Well, why can't art and vandalism co-exist ? Although it is vandalism(if done without permission) I can still see it as art can't I?

 

Haha good answer! Very true you can see it as both I guess I see it as both too to some extent, do you like graffiti art then? If so Who's work do you like in particular?

 

I see quite a bit of it in the UK and was involved in it for a bit, my favorite writers are 10FT and Vamp

 

I don't have a graffiti scene where I am, but it honestly depends on the person. For example, banksy's work is so popular, anyone who gets their walls tagged tends to keep or even sell the art.

 

I've never heard of 10FT but I did use some photos of vamps work in a school art project, his work is pretty nice. What sort of graffiti did you do?

Yeah definitely, you see examples of his work everywhere now as well, printed on canvases, on birthday cards etc... There's no doubt he's a great artist in my eyes

Makes me laugh when people consider it vandalism... If some famous artist like van gogh started doing there paintings on walls would people be like OMFG VANDAL VANDAL!!!! In a way it is vandalism due to the fact its on others property but the fact is its still ART

 

Depends whether they're well made or just fugly.. and yeh WHERE you put it.. it's not really mature doing it on new build facilities etc..

 

Graffiti is art and I really love it. It shouldn't be put on building though, bridges and such work better.
