    Pride - Dafuq?

This is seriously pissing me off.

Everday, I hear somebody saying "I'm proud to be American/any nationality", "Proud to be a Christian/any religion".

I wanna know, why? Why are you proud to be xxx? Have you achieved anything to support your country? How can you be proud to be religious? Why?

Me, I'm not proud to be Serbian. Why? I haven't done anything special to say "goddamn I'm proud to be Serbian", and why should I be proud to be Serbian?
It's not like I achieved anything by being it, and I definitely didn't choose it, I was born "into it", so why be proud of it?

    ---

"I'm proud to be German, we won 3 Soccer worldcups" - hold up motherfucker, YOU didn't win shit. I haven't seen you play for Germanys national team, so why be proud of that?

"I'm proud to be a fan of [insert any sports team here]" Why goddammit why? It's not like your "support" made them win any match, and you sure didn't help "your team" by playing with them.

    ---

If you're proud of yourself because you achieved something (dunno, worked your ass off to become a CEO, MVP in some sport or something like that), that's cool, and you should be proud of what you achieved.

But why are you proud to be a certain nationality/religion/whatnot? I just dont get it.

tl;dr/didn't unterstand shit: Why are you proud of something you didn't achieve/were born into?

    Explain

Because your country is like your team, when they do well at something it gives a better impression of the whole country. I wouldn't say I was proud of my country for being good at sport - I'd say I was proud of my country because it's a good place to live and it offers a lot to it's people.

I have to agree with you here.

I almost never get to say that for my country though. :/

So basicly you're proud of things that OTHER people managed to do? What do you do to make your country a good place to live in?

I'd say I'm a good citizen considering I'm not in jail or living from Government hand-outs. I pay taxes from my wages to help sustain all the free services the country provides. I'm a contributor to the country.

It's possible to be proud of other peoples work, not just your own. Generally you support sports teams that are from your own country, so saying you're proud of them is generally because they're from your nation and it makes it look good. So yes, I am on occasion proud even when I haven't had a direct involvement in those peoples achievements.

I'd rather be proud of who I am than try to be something I am not.

I'm proud of my heritage. Frankly, I loathe the complacency of the American lifestyle, and what's worse is how much of that has spilled over, not just into Mexico, but all over the world. For that reason, I like to show respect and appreciation towards the people which my family descends from. It would be a shame if we allowed our past to be erased from our memories.

What I love about Mexico more than anything is the culture, as well as the history (and of course, let's not forget the food). Pre-colombian cultures had some amazing conceptions of the world, and their art was beautiful. I would be ashamed not to be proud of my ancestors.

I think everyone should be proud of their heritage. However, there's a difference between mindless pride (where one flaunts their nationality for no reason other than that they are a part of it) and having reverence.
