I recently invested in this company seeing as it has a bullish pigeon graph, higher volume than usually and looks like a good trade. (4.2k in this stock)
    Anybody with their opinion?

Sears has dropped since this post and was dropping when it was posted. There's no way you made a "huge return" going long on this recently.

OP and I have very different definitions of "huge returns" I guess. 4% moves one way or another are well within normal short term variation.

In order to make "huge returns" off the 4% gain, he'd have to be leveraged and I'm assuming he's not since his post sounds like he just bought shares. Also, with commissions and greater capital gains tax for short term trading like this, it becomes very difficult to profit with a strategy like this.

Regardless, gratz to OP on your successful move.

As a trader you must identify your own goals, 4% may not seem a lot to you but it is indeed a lot to me. I added more shares when it plunge down to 40.60 range and had a return of approx $600 (which accounts for almost 1% of my total assets).

Commission is only a measly $4.99 per transaction, and for starters i'm only 19.. making an investment and choosing stocks around my age is unlikely so i rather play it safe and not leverage to $20,000 considering i have to pay tuition myself and everything.

Especially if you're going to long sears.. price may still decrease (it is not confirmed a good buy yet, at least to me..) graph is starting to look better; short squeeze may happen..and i have a tight watch on this stock.

We should have a discussion board for which stocks to buy.

I caught ARIA as a short at 21.50 to 19.50 last friday! was quite happy with this trade.

4% is definitely a lot. Just not "huge gains," especially when it's just on a portion of your portfolio. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't encouraging leverage or high risk trading at all, quite the opposite actually.

With $5 commission, you're getting 0.25% eaten each $4,000 combined entry and exit. Doing this for week long trades, plus increased tax on short term capital gains, gives you a huge disadvantage to overcome. That said, if you think you have an edge and it's the best way for you to do things, then definitely keep up with it.

Is your trading style purely technical?

    Strictly on technical.
For example yesterday was a horrible day for the gun stocks RGR, SWHC .. was oversold it jumped a huge high of 9% which was pretty intense, i rode it for 4% gain.

I am shorting RIMM not because of earning report is due tomorrow and i'm basically taking a gamble here.

The trend line has been steady for 1 month its due to drop soon due to high RSI. It looks extremely bearish for a drop and as long as revenue isn't higher than analysts i think we are looking at around a drop to 12.50. Especially how they used A LOT of their money for the development of BB10 and having no sales at all. I did not hear or have anyone on facebook buying a new black berry.. or seen anyone with a brand new blackberry only samsung galaxy and iphone5/s

    thoughts?

Also if you were wondering if i was using techical analyst on ARIA, that was complete luck. I caught it during a bounce so I rode it, sold it for little profit and then it was declining so quick i got in for a short and got that deal. (Barely happens! always have a nice list!)

Interesting. I'm not really familiar with technical analysis beyond the very basics and have always been skeptical that retail investors could achieve sustainable success with it in a world of automated HFT.

Add me on MSN and we can talk things over sometime if you'd like.

In the United States, it depends on your income and how long you hold the investment for. Investments held for a least a year are considered long-term, and taxed lower than short-term investments.

Sure, if you have skype it would be a nicer communication tool to have actually (Send me a message on sythe). I haven't gotten to update this thread but i'll update it today.

During the Christmas break I decided that I would ride RIMM up from the fall (due to service revenue, search it up if you wanna read more). As I got in at 11.00 the stock became to fall to 10.70 at this point I had 1000 shares. I went to work and found out I was booked for the whole week.. so the next morning I sold my shares for a lost of .20 (10.80 from 11).. the next day the stock rode up 13%+ to 11.90-12. I was quite pissed as I was at work and that would of been an easy 1,000 dollars. I saw more upside of this stock and decided to take a risk for a 3 month ride.

    January 30th (Phone reveiled)
    Release date: Current unknown ??
    March 28: Revenue day.

As I researched it more, a total of 2 days of research.. i decided i'd give it another shot as it decided to run sideways for the following couple of days.
(The company quarter report, phone look-out, videos, etc)

I bought this stock at 11.90.. for 2 weeks it decided to run sideways (-500$ to neutral..repetitively) and finally on Friday BOOM!

    http://i.imgur.com/VegVb.png

Picture describes everything.. it is actually at 14.90 (not 13.95.. Questrade tends to do that when market closes)

I may be selling my shares tomorrow depending on the day or may keep it until March as I am quite confident that this stock will reach $20 by at-least March.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
@Seanboy Investopedia is an amazing website to get started on those kind of things. I started out using this 2 years ago to practice and accumulate profit.. let me tell you.. it is hell lot of difference when you go in with real cash. I was up 30% in just a year of trading.. down 10% in a month (3 month in a row.. total was like -31%) from the real thing.. i started to collect more confident and not being as greedy.

    What went wrong
    1) Broke my rules on trading
    2) Got extremely greedy
    3) Started to listen to others and not my own personal opinion and the way I viewed the chart and news
    4) Bought stocks that weren't in high in volume

After the 4th month I had recovered everything and way over positive now.

    Tips on starter using simulators:

Invest in something you actually have / can afford .. not $100,000 not realistic

Start to invest using graphs / technical analysis

    Treat it like real money..

Invite a view friends to invest.. have a monthly prize of $100+ for highest gains (worked like a charm.. in treating it like real cash)
    2 friends = 50/50
4 friends = 25/25/25/25 each participants so on

Make commission $9.99 per trade (this really eats your cash in real stock market trading)

Let me know if you guys are interested with me keeping up with this thread.. I am planning to make a blog in the summer about investing to help people start and describe what I went through as a trader.

p.s my english is not the best!
