what kind of rifle?

At the moment, I have got a .270 Redfield rifle, I am looking at trading it in to get a bigger rifle, I am looking at a $2500 budget, I live in the pacific northwest, i currently hunt deer (whitetail, black tail, and mule), elk, and black bear, i am looking at going for grizzly bears, and mountain lion also. I am looking at a Remington .300 H&H magnum, or some sort of .338 what do you guys think i should get?

 

Cant go wrong with a Remington 700 model, they make all kinds of different [submodels?] of that gun

Great gun, my cousin has one with a nice bushnell 12x40 scope. You can really reach out and touch something with it. His is a .243 caliber, but they make them in .308 which I assume will take down a grizz.

 

+1 for remington 700. It was my step up from a .270 and .22-250 and its done me great (little too big a step when i first got it) . You could get one for less than a grand and buy yourself a nice mosin nagant (or a half dozen hahah) and a few spam cans of ammo for fun and some heavy duty plinking (havent hunted with my mosin but its definitely up to the job but i havent been close enough to a deer more than 1-2 times to take one out iron sights)

edit: my remy is chambered in .300 mag (you will want a nice recoil pad regardless of who you are). Forgot to add that, a .308 would be more practical ammo wise but it depends on what you are wanting to do with it, if you shoot over 280-300 yards and REALLLLY want to reach out and touch something get the .300. Honestly, myself living in texas wish i had gotten a .308 as the lands pretty flat and the .300 will go on seemingly forever and the charge seems awful big. Kicks harder than a .30-06 by quite a bit. Also ive ruined some meat with the .300 when stuff got in closer than 100 yards or so, seriously the thing will gore stuff.

Considered a .30-06 ? Its a nice medium between the 300 and 308. Ive never had the occasion to hunt bear, but my uncle takes down moose and elk with his .300 with ease.. those are some big animals.

I agree with everyone on the Remington 700 for around $540 you can't go wrong on a good rifle.

If your looking to take down a big game for a $2500 budget maybe consider a AR-10? They shoot a 7.62x51 (.308Win) which is a pretty suitable hunting round. And the gun costs around $1800. Even though it's semi-auto it's 100% legal to hunt with one. I've heard though that some people tend to get angry if your hunting with a black one and not the camo version but not sure on that. I don't own one but i plan on buying one next winter when i get home from boot camp for when i move to Alaska for big game hunting.

 

Ar-10 will be ridiculed by most any hunter. Semi autos are inherently less accurate and the ar holds the "black gun" stigma. Seriously, ar-10 is a step down from any of the rifles mentioned in thread for hunting. Great sporter rifle, decent shit hit the fan rifle. Trash hunting rifle.

I still like my 5.56 AR-15, Granted I don't go hunting much so I wouldn't know the hardcore scene that is. My experience with the AR-10 is limited, as one of my old army buddies has a old one, but he loves it. He has around 20k in a gun collection though, I think I have spent at most 5k on mine.
