drug charges isnt a violent crime. Murder, rape. robbery, domestic violence etc...is what im talking about. I would want someone like that to be locked in a cell for 23 hours a day.

Yeah no shit it isn't a violent crime lol. I was giving you an example of what I was talking about. The first paragraph was directed towards you, the second one was just me continuing with the idea. So you're not going to elaborate -.-

the first paragraph you describe isnt an alternative sentence. They already so some of those things in jail. People cook do laundry and license plates etc They have classes in order to finish highschool or just to take in general. An alternative sentence is doing something besides going to jail. Like the thread i posted about the woman cooking thanksgiving dinner or the kid sentenced to 10 years of church.

An alternative sentence is anything they can do besides sitting in a jail cell 20 hours a day. Go look at the lock-up shows and what not, very few of those people actually carry on jobs that would help them in any way when they get out of prison. I've known people that have gone to prison for 2+ years, and they did absolutely nothing. It's not just about helping them, teaching them good working habits ect. You're not getting the big picture, and you still haven't elaborated on what you said earlier. Alternative sentence can mean anything from them having to dig holes for 10 hours a day, to spending 10+ hours a day working in there cells. You obviously don't know anything about what goes on inside a jail, doing laundry and those types of things aren't going to guarantee them a job when they leave jail.

I do not like when alternative punishment is offered because of there being no space in the jails.

For some crimes I believe it is acceptable. There are some good people who commit a crime but do not deserve major jail time because of a mistake they made. An example would be someone accidentally killing someone after self defence.

If offered an alternative punishment it should never be something like 10 years of church; not only is it retarded to force someone into a religion but it is also an insult to the religion itself.

An Alternative Sentence is a solution to their punishment outside of the penal system. You never go into a prison you are sentenced to do something as you penance that is an alternative to entering the penal system.

I support Alternative punishments due to their nature, its better to make the person do something so it fulfills their time and not go mad, and sit 24/7 in a cell where they do nothing for their time.
make them clean dishes.. write something.. play basketball.

Yes and no, when it is personal favors, like the woman cooking dinner for the 3 cops, absolutely not, that will just make cops be on you for every little thing, but when it helps the community, such as having them farm, or do community service, absolutely do it.

I think, if for instance, someone who broke into a retired persons house and robbed it, should then be made to volunteer at a old folks home for a while, that way they can see the kind of person their victimising.

But these punishments should be still in context of the crime, I don't know why the woman was made to cook the meals, but i doubt it was even anything to do with her crime.

Not at all. I don't think the person will learn anything from their mistakes if their punishment is something as silly as that.

No punishment like this should not be given to anyone no matter what the case is. Everyone has to follow the law and receive punishment by a judge decision example: jail time , Community hours , paying bail
