Will you let your kids believe in santa?

Just wondering when you guys get older and have kids of your own will you let them believe in santa? I don't think i will. Mainly because whats the point? your lying to them from age 3-4 to age 8-10. Then when they find out they get devastated about it and ask about all the other holiday fairy tails etc... To me it would just cause a big mess. Then when you find out your parents lied to you about santa you start thinking of other things they could be lying to you about etc.. Im just gunna tell my kids right off the bat that there is no santa.

My kids are believing everything I tell them.
I'll use Santa as a way of keeping my kids out of trouble. "Santa won't being you any presents if you punch your brother in your face." Problem solved...

I wasn't devastated when I found out Santa wasn't real, I just took it on the chin and got on with my life, I still got everything the same as before, just this time I didn't believe a strange man was coming in to my house.

Edit: I don't have kids, I was referring to my future kids.

Yeah I'd let my kids (if I have them) believe in Santa. It just sounds like it would be easier, such as in situations Shoop mentioned, to keep them out of trouble and have them behave better. It's not really that much of a big deal when they find out Santa isn't real, wasn't for me anyways.

I'd rather tell my kids the truth, rather than that an obese man breaks into our home annually, watches to see if you're sleeping, leaves behind strange items and that these items should be opened. Doesn't seem like an intelligent thing to teach my children.

if you tell your children santa isn't real, they'll go tell everybody at school that santa isn't real, and that'll cause a shitstorm and just devastate so many kids

    so don't fucking do it

I'd agree with you completely. This is absolutely will destroy the childhood as only if it happens.

I'd let my kids believe in Santa.

I am going to let my kids believe in whatever they choose. If they want to believe in Santa I will pretend with them, if they want to believe in the Tooth Fairy I'll put money under their pillow. It's all cultural traditions and it's sad to see the decimation of culture and I don't want to make my kids cynical pricks by the time they're 8. And I am sure that it's going to depend on my wife too. It's not solely my choice.

I suppose I'll break it to them when they're ready. My parents never really cared, and just went along with it. I then figured out that Santa was fake after not coming with presents... EVER!

Shoop's response wraps my thoughts up perfectly, use it to your advantage as a parent. I turned 20 only a few days ago so hopefully there won't be any kids on the way. However, I'll tell them that there was a tale of a man named Santa Claus. Hence the word tale, if you throw them bits and pieces then they might just catch along once they're more mature. The other issue is, if you plan on admitting your child to a public school before they're 10 for example. Expect them to hear about Santa Claus, it's a legacy that should be passed down from generation to generation in my opinion.

Perhaps. I think Nero basically laid out my thoughts on the matter. My lover wants them to believe in it so yeah... As of now that's what's up.

I don't want to be known as the parent whos kid went around telling all the other kids that santa isn't real lol. If it brings more joy into my child's childhood I don't see any point not to let them believe. Most of my good childhood memories were based around Christmas.

Why not? It's not like you're hurting them. It makes Christmas more fun and exciting when you're younger. I mean think about all the Christmas movies about Santa, Rudolph, etc you watched when you were young. I know I enjoyed them and none of it would have meant anything if I knew it was just a big lie. Most likely, they will find out he isn't real on their own. I can't really see how anyone wouldn't catch on at some point. I did when I noticed some of my presents had the same wrapping paper and the hand writing was the same as my parent's. I still didn't even tell my parents I knew until several years later because Christmas wouldn't have been the same to me then. Besides, your kids won't nag you constantly on what to get them or bitch at you when they don't get what they want if they think it's from Santa.

Again, as others have mentioned, the sole use for this when I have children is to have some form of control and an advantage when I wan't them to behave.

It's a way of life for most people I've ever bumped in to, you just tell your kids santa isnt real. I've never met someone who has told their children otherwise.

It's hard to hold on to belief, so I'll let my kids stay kids as long as they can -- even if it includes lying about Santa.
