Looking to host a private server, but what host should I use?

I want to start a private server with some friends, and was wondering if anyone had suggestions on what host I should pay for..

I'm basically looking for a reasonably priced dedicated host or vps that can hold alot of players without lag. An estimate of how much ram i would need to host 100 players without lag would help alot. I'll most likely be hosting on linux
