Thinking of getting a phone? FUCK CONTRACTS NIGGA!

Alright, so I just wanted to tell you guys what you can do instead of paying for that shitty $60/month plan.

Lets say you want the new iPhone 5(since all the kids love this shit) for example, they sell it for $150 with a 3 year contract. The average person will get a 3 year plan with the phone, sounds like a good deal since it's for $150. The person looks at it without the contract deal, and the phone costs say $600-$700. And they're like "WHAT THE FUCK!? Fuck that, I'm gonna get a 3 year contract with data, texting, and calling" and all that shit. So they get the 3 year contract, and say it's $60 a month, maybe even $70(but lets say $60). So $60 a month for 3 years, is "60 x 36 = $2160 + $150(phone) = $2310". That's a big rip off in my opinion.

What I've done is, you're better off buying the phone without a contract, and if not, better yet buying it on eBay factory unlocked and all that shit. Buying a Sim Card, and getting a prepaid plan for the phone. Now I live in Canada, and I use a service called Rogers. With the Rogers plan I have, it's $20/month for Unlimited Texting, calling from 3PM-6PM(anytime other than that, I can't call which is bullshit) and 100MB's of data(not bad not bad for prepaid). Now the all soo smart LeetNeo figured that you can use VoiP(even on 3G) to combat the 3PM-6PM problem. Now the VoiP app uses 0.5MB's per minute, so 0.5MB x 200 = 100MB's(not including all the other shit you do like Facebook, Twitter and web browsing), so you got around 200 minutes? And you can even use that shit on WiFi, so even better. Anyways, lets say the phone you buy is $700, and $20 x 36 = $720 + $700 = $1420. Still considerably less money than $2310. And even if you don't get an extremely good smartphone, you can go with a cheap Android(which can still be decently fast).

I know people need a lot more data than just 100MB's, but generally the majority don't need to be on the internet 24/7 Facebooking, Twitter, and all that shit. But this is the cheaper alternative to save your money, and not get robbed by phone companies trying to make you pay $60 or more for a phone plan. Just letting everyone know, there's a work around for a lot of things.

tl;dr? Don't pay for a 3 year contract or whatever from a phone company which charges you like $60 a month. Get a phone without a contract and get a prepaid plan and use VoiP over something like 3G(or WiFi, even better). Saves you a lot more money in the long run.

texting + data + calling costs me quite a bit more than $60, but I also have a plan with more data usage (5gb). I know I could be saving money, but I'm lazy and I can afford it. Thanks for the info, though.

 

Its only voip to voip calls which are "free", so if you want to call a landline or a non-voip phone, you have to pay for extra credits. If you're only going to use your phone for wifi calls, then you might as well not bother with a sim.

 

I like my iPhone 4S, I'd never think of getting an iPhone 5 for a while as they're still working the kinks out and I've heard some bad reviews about it. Anyhow, I think the $60/month plan is worth it for 4G and unlimited (international) text & call.

altho my plan is pre deece, $50 /month for ulimited texting, 1 g of data, like 350 minutes, I pay I believe an extra $5 for caller ID

 

Anyone with a half decent brain could figure this out. I never buy phones on contract, just buy a phone from the cheapest webshop and get a cheap contract somewhere.

I pay 11€/month for 250 sms/call minutes combined & 1000mb internet. Paid 300€ for my phone. In 2 years I pay like 270 for the contract and 300 for the phone makes 570. Otherwise I wouldve been on a 30-40€+ contract which would make it 720€ or more

 

Why get an iPhone if you can't use the true potential of the phone on a different plan? Might as well get a regular flip phone and save yourself $2K.

Seems like it would be hassle only having 200 minutes of talk time, plus the 3pm-6pm call time. Then, you can't use gps, internet, apps, etc beacuse they use data.

Waste of a phone imo.

 

No, I use the Dell Voice app, and I can call landlines, cell phones, and even have my own Toronto number(while I live in Winnipeg) and people can call me too.

I was just giving an example, doesn't have to be iPhone 5, I'm a fan of Android. HTC One X+ looks sick, 1.7GHz Quad Core, win.

You can use the full potential, you can still call, text, and use data. The real problem is, people don't jailbreak their iPhones, thus not using the full potential of their phone. Why wouldn't you want to have all these sick animations on your iPhone, rather than the old boring bullshit, and apps you can install for free.

I just stick with the prepaid phones - $50 a month unlimited everything works for me. Switching to a boost mobile kyocera hydra later today. And they have shrinking payments which is awesome.

 

Yo bro, fuck... There's this service called "Mobilicity" in my country, but it's in other provinces, and not mine. It's unlimited local everything, and I can't fucking get it in my city, it's cheap as fuck too. I wish I can get that for $50/month.

I only ever go near Pay As You Go (PAYG)

 

I use Virgin Mobile prepaid. It costs me $25/month for 300 minutes of calling and unlimited data and texting. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who is unsure (although I think it's $30/month now for new customers).

 

Surprisingly sometimes lol, but it's a special student plan, and I can't reduce the amount of minutes anyway so I just roll w/ it

 

You guys are smart, don't fall for those badly priced bullshit, called $60/month or even more. I also don't think Virgin Mobile supports sim cards.

1000 Minutes, anytime number - Home/Mobile Phones - Unlimited Texts - Unlimited Internet - 12 Month Contract = £12.50 ($20ish)

Because I have been with the same people for 6 years and I threatened to leave them if they didn't give me a better deal. I also can a free phone every 12 months or I can pay a bit extra to get Iphone etc. Like $140ish extra per year for a better phone.

 

Dude, that's a sick plan. I wish I had that, but yo, most phone companies don't want you to leave them, so even if they're making a $2 profit, they'll still give you that plan.
