How to take advantage of the "end of the world" scare?

I'm sure you all have heard of the December thing where there have been different stories about the world changing, the world ending, and all those kinds of stories. Now it may be a bit too late to take advantage of it, maybe not.

What would you do if you had the chance, or the money to invest? What would you have done and what would you do now?

My dad told me a few months ago that he was thinking of investing in gold. He didn't do his research, but I doubt he thought about it long. A few days before the December 21st, I suspect there will be panic from a lot of people, like the ones that were foolish enough to believe previous theories of the world ending.

What kind of panic do you predict? What would you stay away from, and why? What would you take advantage of? And why do you think you'll be able to take advantage of it?

Everyone thinks differently, I would love to see everyone's thoughts. It's too bad I didn't think of creating this thread before. Everyone would have their reason for their answer(s), and some would be explained better than others, some more likely to happen than others, but anything can really happen.

Personally, anyone who does believe the theory probably doesn't have enough assets to dump onto the market.

The proportion of people who believe the theory against those that don't I think means that there will be no difference in economy.

People like my dad would still try to take advantage of it for example, they would have their own prediction, and it would somehow affect assets.

An example is gold has always been one of the safest forms of investment. Wouldn't that mean people would invest a bit-more into gold? Won't people decide to cash out on stocks? What if there was some sort of scare that made this even more believable?

There was already this NASA hoax thing about an asteroid having a 30% chance, it was soon revealed that it was a hoax, but we're still pretty far away and anything can make this more believable in the upcoming weeks.

The gold prediction might be true, but it would probably be a very small drop and more or less spread over a longer period of time, so I don't think it could effect the price, unless there are many superstitious millionaires. I've never thought about it though and it will definitely be interesting to see :)

You're dad is silly to think that this gold prediction is ,indeed, a valid claim.

You're silly for spelling "your" incorrectly. But read through it again, I told you it was just something he thought about and didn't do any research, he just mentioned about thinking about it.

But would you care to back up your answer? You think that gold won't move at the slightest by then? You think it will crash?

Has there ever been scares similar to this in the past? What happened to the markets back then? (i'm asking because I don't actually know)

Nothing like this. This is known by everyone around the world, stories, news, movies etc.

I know of the 2000 thing, but I was young, and I doubt I'd be able to find anything of use there, It also can't be as popular as the 2012 myth.

The 2012 prediction is about the end of the world right? So, really nothing would be worth investing in because... well, no world.

Gold is a very solid asset to "invest" in. Although, it's really a hedge against inflation more than anything. I have personally invested heavily in precious metals, mainly silver, and it has worked out extremely well. This isn't a get-rich-quick type of thing though (at least not until an economic collapse), this is a 'preserve your wealth' type of thing. I started buying gold at $250/ounce and silver at $5/ounce. Just take a look at prices now.. And they'll only go up as things get worse.

TL;DR if your dad is expecting an economic collapse he is doing the right thing, although I'd suggest silver over gold any day.
