    Moral/"legal" responsibility to refund.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but I found no other place.

One sythe trader added me to buy gold, he seemed fairly trusted so I sold to him the amount he asked for.
He then told me a friend of his needed some gold too. He adds his friend to the conversation and tells me to add him, eventually I start a separate conversation with the second gold buyer, who had no feedback or sythe account (apparently).
I tell the second buyer I am not going first, then I talk to the first buyer and he tells me he trusts the second buyer and that, in case that he scams me, he would refund me.
Under this premise I sell gold to the second buyer without help from the first buyer.
Several days later, the second buyer contacts me, saying he would like to buy more gold, I ask him if he can go first, he convinces me to go first under the grounds that I have gone first before. He scams me.

I talked to the first buyer, he told me he was going to talk to his friend, 2 days later I ask him if his friend came online, he didn't, he tells me he can check if he is online in runescape, he logs into his account, apparently his friend cleared his account.
Now I ask him if he can refund me.
    Extract from the conversation:
    I am "Love"
    "Dan" is the first buyer.
    love dice:
*oh, I googled his email and it appears he had a banned account
*Should have done that earlier ::)
    Dan dice:
    *:(
    love dice:
*Mate, could you take responsibility for his scams and pay me back? I know it's shitty to say, but I believe it's what corresponds.
    *It'd be a nice gesture.
    Dan dice:
*to be fair mate, its your own fault for going first to him, personally im gutted, because i trusted him
*i cant fork out for a trade that was nothing to do with me?
    love dice:
*That is true, but I only trusted him because you told me you trusted him and that you would refund me if he scammed me.
    *Remember?
    Dan dice:
*yeah that was to do with the trade i was associated with?
    *for membership
*it appears he has scammed me too
*my battlescape account has been cleaned
    love dice:
    *Well. That's true.
    Dan dice:
*i'll keep trying to contact him
*your more than welcome to have my battlescape account if that is any consolation
    love dice:
    *no, thanks, though.
    Dan dice:
    *:(
Yes, I googled his account, he had a banned account. It surprises me he didn't know about that too.

Is he obliged to refund me?
I am now suspicious that the first buyer is the second buyer, especially because the second buyer only scammed me when "he wasn't covered" buy the first buyer's reputation. Taking that into account, and somehow applying sythe's policy where if someone's account is hacked, the owner must repay.( I see a connection here because in both the policy and the hypothethical situation, should the scammer and the legitimate seller be the same person, there should be no profit.)
Thanks for reading and for your help. If I didn't make something clear enough, let me know and I'll paraphrase it.

I would honestly just say move on.

It may well have been the same person in both cases, the fact that the first buyer offers to cover any losses on your part with the 2nd guy is very suspicious.

Bottom line is, you trusted him because someone else said he was trusted, despite having no Sythe feedback from anyone.

Learn from the mistake and move on mate, sorry for your loss however.

    Thanks for the feedback.
Just to be sure though, are you sure that even if I present all the conversations and prove that he told me he would refund me if the second buyer scammed me, he isn't obliged to refund me? By sythe staff, that is.

I'm not sure what your asking here.

Is Sythe obliged to refund you? no. You trade at your own risk.
Is the first buyer? No. You took his word, sadly paid the price.

Basically what I am asking is, if he refuses to pay, and I report him, would my case stand? :p
As you said I took his word. I see no difference between him scamming me and him not refunding me after he said he would, as you said, I took his word, wether his word be to trust him or trust his friend.

Being too trustworthy usually just results in being 'burned'. Only trade with people you know to be or have proof of being legitimate.

It depends on if he was promising only to refund if he scammed on that specific trade or something else. It seems like he'd only be guaranteeing a small trade like that instead of trusting someone for an unlimited amount, but I'd have to see the conversation.
