    Programing/Coding websites

So i'm currently getting my GED and really think i would love to be able to code websites. Code them to work, build them and just make websites in general.

I do not know what i should be looking into doing/going for college or any kind of program where i can get skills to do this/what kind of job i would get.

so if anyone knows anything about this or any suggestions please inform me and post any info below!

in the begining of that video simon is talking about how he made his website on notepad (something along that line, but also building websites in general i guess idk)

so please just post any info and if you do any coding for websites ect. or are doing that kind of work in college, hit me up please!

    Cheers

I would pursue a degree in programming at a two year community school, and transfer out as early as possible if I were in your shoes. The biggest mistake in my opinion is making programming a hobby, when you can turn it into a successful degree.

I'm a programmer. I'm actually the administrator of www.bottingvps.com . What are the questions you would like to ask?

if you want to learn how to build websites, learn how to use photoshop etc, designing a website is less about coding than it is about being able to produce nice looking graphics. You'd be able to learn the basic html required to build a website in a few days so in theory you could learn how to design websites in a week, albeit not very good ones.

My personal opinion is that if you're looking to earn money building websites, learn how to SEO, you just can't earn much money from designing websites on their own, especially if you can't rank your website design site neway.

From someone in the field. Move away from the traditional use of HTTPD, Lighttpd daemons, and even from the whole concept of PHP... use Java!

    Java, for web programming?
    Websites in Java?

What unholy monstrosity are you working on?

I'd understand if you said no PHP, because it's a pretty bad language, but Java is not made for light websites, medium websites or any kind of websites that you want to work, at all.

Maybe Node.js is the future with event driven websites, things are definitely getting faster and lighter. LESS, HTML5, Node, coffeescript... great for staying light and providing content faster.

I applied and took a test to major in Computer Engineering at a University. My results are due next week (hope I get accepted!)

Anyhow, I thought that maybe I should be ready and study ahead, since I'm always behind in classes due to my language barrier. I live in Korea, but I still have trouble understanding it and classes are a horror!

I decided to start learning programming from the very fundamentals and somebody recommended HTML to me, and yes I'm aware that it's not a "programming" language. But the important thing is, yes, you can grasps the basic concepts of creating a webpage in less than a week, and you could probably design a webpage in a week, too. I took my time, so it took me two. I started last monday and I finished yesterday. I didn't even need to keep a consistent schedule; I remember more days in which I've been derping around on the computer watching mythbusters while using mousekeys to alch in RS, than actually learn HTML.

I learnt it at w3schools.com and it's a pretty nice site. It's very simple and easy to navigate through. There are a lot of advertisements and unwanted links here and there, but they don't interfere with your learning much.

And yes, you can script an entire website with notepad. It's a lot simpler than it sounds, trust me :p

    tl;dr?

w3schools.com <=great place to learn how to create a website
2 weeks <= more than enough to learn how to make one, even if you spend only an hour a day or even less.

I'm on to learn an actual programming language now, maybe Python because it seems so simple :p

    cheers!

I'm no pro at this as I've started last week, but I speculate that he mistook Java and JavaScript for the same thing..?

Does Computer Engineering cover software engineering?
    Good luck either way.

While you can, it's highly impractical for long stretches of time.

    Not really, http://w3fools.com/
Incorrect information all over the place :)

It's possible, and I hope so. The last thing the web needs is Java back ends all over the place.
