I've never heard of Mensa and am not a member. I take it, it's some kind of forum or what?

I only know one person who is a member of Mensa and he is without a doubt the strangest person I've ever met. He went to a really good school and then went on to one of the top universities in the UK. I have literally no idea how the accepted him because whilst he is a genius, as a person he is totally absurd. You can't tell if he's genuinely being himself or just taking the piss. He speaks in this weird squeaky voice and just screams at random moments for no reason. Mental, totally mental.

Its an organization of people with pretty high IQ. So yes it is like kind of a forum but you need like really high IQ to get in. If im Correct you need to do a test which i guess is some kind of IQ test and if you pass it you get in.

@bad_moose Maybe he has some kind of Autism or something? And i'm not trying to say this in any bad way. Like i went to school with a guy that had autism he screamed at random stuff and was just as annoying as you possibly could get and was all immature and such. Even tho all of that he was really smart went out with straight A's And such. And im not saying that Autism Means that you scream for no reason i was just taking him as an example.

I also know an autistic kid who's in mensa. He claims to be able to see number visually in his mind as they work themselves through problems, and he can solve basically anything by sitting by and watching the patterns straighten out in his head.. we spent a period of math listening to him ramble off pi numbers and reciting hundreds of squares of two... I don't know if that's what it's called, but he sat there for nearly 30 minutes going "2x2 is 4x2 is 8x2 is 16x2 is 32x2 is 64x2 is 128x2 is..." which doesn't seem impressive until he's at 2^23 and rambling at top speed "... is 8,388,608x2 is 16,777,216x2 is..."

It was pretty impressive to be sure.

Awsome, Well this guy wasnt in mensa he was just smart in general. Another Thing that was pretty creepy was, He could read books extremly fast like really really fast. Like his eyes where just going up and down between the pages and you expect that to be some kind of cheap trick like yeah you didnt really just do that. He could actually explain afterwards what it was that he read it was on the line of scary. Kinda made me think of rainman.

Even tho all of this with how smart you see that the person is. I know this might sound wierd but like he cant look a person into the eye straight, I think this is with most of autistic people. They Can be really smart but they cant concentrate when there are much other people in the room. Like he Really cannot starr into someone's Eyes. I know it really does sound wierd but i hope you get the point.

If I wanted to join, I bet I could. My ACT score puts me in the top 5% of America, and I didn't study at all. I also didn't do any school work or learn anything my first two years of highschool, like an idiot. So top 5% with all those hindrances isn't that bad.

However, I do not want to pay the annual fees, nor do I want to spend money and time on an IQ test to get join a group.

Edit: Emperor_Nero is probably a member.

@Justinkiller That's Really Impressive actually. Do you think that you learned more from home those 2 years? Like I have had many problems and such in my family for a couple years so i havent showed up that much because i've had to taken care of my mom and such because she and my dad has argued quite a bit and such just alot of shit has recently happend to me. But i would honestly say that from the time i've spent home its not like i have not been doing jack shit. I would honestly say i've learnt more from reading the newspaper every day and Reading on stuff on the internet Because i spend much of my time researching stuff on the internet that i find interesting, Music History, Nature and just History in general. The Reason my English is pretty bad is because i am from Sweden and not to try or brag or anything belive it or not i was actually one of the best people in my class at English at the time and i probably still would be. Well my main point is i think that i've learned more from actually researching still on the internet which i find funny than being in school doing nothing.

I'm pretty sure that you'll have a lot of trouble finding anybody on Sythe with an IQ high enough to be in the mensa... lol

But this morning, I read about a Greek psychologist with the highest IQ in the world; 198.
I wonder what he can do :/

According to this chart: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACT_(test)#Score_cumulative_percentages_and_comparison_with_SAT you scored a 30, which isn't difficult to do. Also, Mensa only accepts those who are in the 98th percentile or higher. I'm just saying, just because you did moderately well on the ACT doesn't mean that you would score high on an IQ test.

OT: My dad and 3 of my uncles are or were members of Mensa at one time. In case you're wondering, 3 of the 4 are engineers, and the last one is a radiologist.

I'm sure that there are several people on here who would qualify for Mensa.
Edit: And I'm sure that we can all think of some people on here that would.

I actually got a 31, while carrying a 1.9 GPA. Guess I am higher than 97% of America, so only 1% off. Like I said, if I studied and applied myself I would definitely be able to get in. Also, how is a 31 not hard to do?

Maybe it is for some people, but I was basically just saying that it's not extremely impressive. Also, intelligence is nothing if you don't apply yourself. It's a real shame that you don't. You could get into a decent college with that ACT score if you had a decent GPA. But you might have already gotten into a decent college. I don't know you. However, I did know a guy who had a GPA very similar to yours and ended up getting a full ride scholarship to some university in Colorado. He was a math wizard, though.

Anyways, maybe you could get into Mensa (although talk is cheap), but IQ doesn't mean everything. There are different types of intelligence, and like I said before, it means nothing if you don't apply yourself.

1.9 gpa was my cumulative going into 11th grade, the year we take the ACT. I am a senior now and last year had a 4.6 for the year, this year I got a 4.8, with my additional AP class I could take. I am pissed as hell I didn't apply myself, but what's done is done. I got into MSU, the only college I really wanted to go to, so no big deal.

Well I'm glad you got into the college you wanted to, and it sounds as if you learned from your mistakes. That's really what matters. I used to be really lazy and not apply myself, and then I got a wake up call. It's been peaches and cream ever since.

I wouldn't really suggest joining Mensa. I think you said that you're not planning on joining anyways, but whatever. There's not really any benefits other than socializing with some intelligent people. It's really just a group that people can join so that they can brag about how smart they are. Out of the 4 people in my immediate family who have been apart of Mensa at one time or another, all except for 1 (I think) have either decided to no longer be members, or died. According to them it wasn't that great.

Yea I wasn't planning on joining. The only reason I even consider joining is it would look good when I am interviewing for a job in a few years, but other than that it seems like a group for stuck up pricks who think they are better than everyone else.

While I am not in MENSA in my high school career I was a member of gifted and talented. You had to take 4 exams I think and the highest score you could get was a 16 iirc. 3 out of 4 I scored over 14 which was excellent and 1 I scored a 15 and another I scored 16. The only one I scored above average on was math because I absolutely detest math. Each was timed and the longest you got was like 45 minutes for the math portion and it was 30 or so questions. The shortest was for patter recognition and reasoning and it was only like 25 or 30 minutes with like 45 questions - it was one of those on your toes thinking kind of tests.

The tests were pattern recognition/abstract reasoning (15), Science (14), and comprehension of the English language (16).

You only have to have an IQ in the top 2% to get in to Mensa. I'm sure tons of people here could get in.

I considered joining, but didn't think it would be worth it at the time.
