I can't watch the video but based off the thread I'll give you my input. Currency was created for a reason. I think everything is much more organised with a currency system.
If we all still went to the Market to trade our farms eggs for a pair of socks not only would it be unsanitary, but I think crime rates would rise as well.

Ahh. You don't understand since you couldn't watch the video :p. You took it too literal,What it's saying is What would you strive to be in life if money wasnt the driving factor behind it, like would you be an artist or a musician? What would you want to do?

I didn't watch the video, but I'm speaking based on your question: "What would you strive to be in life if money wasn't the driving factor behind it, like would you be an artist or a musician? What would you want to do?"

We all yearn for happiness. Money is just one of the biggest contributing factors for happiness.

Now, if money were to not exist, I believe all humans would still work on the basis of happiness. This, however, is not necessarily a good thing. Tedious, boring jobs such as factory workers, miners, or even cashiers at fast food restaurants would no longer exist. As a result, we'd have a less functional society. Money used to add some reason into taking the jobs above. Now, there is absolutely no point in becoming a cashier, unless it's really your passion and makes you happy to take orders all day. Which I doubt.

what if money were no object?

It's hard to answer this, because money is an object. Many times it is the main driving factor. It's difficult to do things that you love without money. However, I understand the question and had some relevant experiences.

I studied chemical engineering in a Uni in the US. I did it because I liked chemistry, but chemists and chemistry teachers don't make much money. So I did engineering for the money. It was tedious, and not interesting for me, I realized my mistake and I went off to do what I wanted while studying chem. Long story short I was broke, homeless a few times, and ended up working terrible minimum wage jobs to support myself and my life. I returned to engineering and now I'm several years behind, but I still find it boring and tedious, however it generally pays better after graduation.

Not everyone can go off and do whatever, a bunch of dreamers won't get anything done. I'm reminded of the satire Gulliver's Travels, where the people on the floating island have all kinds of advanced technology and mathematics and intelligence but fail to use it for anything practical.

I'd strive towards the same goals in life, because money shouldn't dictate that to begin with.

I have always felt this way about life. Admittedly I have grown up in a very privileged position. ( I would say upper class but it's only because my parents save their money and manage it very well. )

I've also listened to Alan Watts for years :D

I definitely suggest listening to some of his other talks about things.

Most likely like Heaven if you were to ask me. Money is no object there as God provides everything and anything you could possibly need. Not to mention things that money couldn't buy to begin with. EDIT: I would do whatever intrigues me.

what if money were no object?

Oh I see. At the moment I have no idea what I want to do with my life. I enjoyed playing video games in my spare time but I lost interest in that. I stopped working out a couple of years ago but I might pick it up again. If I could hang out at the beach all day with friends I've known for years I'd have to choose that.

I feel I might still might be going about it the wrong way. I would love to play music but I've never had enough time to invest into learning an instrument.
Thanks for posting, really got me thinking.

You're welcome and I'm glad it did. Cause I have no idea what I want to do with my life either and I just want to do something I'll like and have fun with. I like being social too so it would have to be a social job. Idk hopefully I figure it out one day, one day soon.

Money (or something else) is always going to be a part of trading, if its not printed currency it will be gold or diamonds. The only other option is exchanging services which will in itself act as a currency and it does in a way in the present day.

Money is essentially a representation of services and their need along with personal intellect at the current moment. It acts as the balance in uneven trades, for example you work for 8-12 hours a day and don't actually get anything tangible from it, so instead you are offered money for the trade which you can then trade for just about anything you want if you have enough of it. If money were not to exist it would be a time voucher or another rare material ECT which would then be traded for anything.

    Did you watch the video?

This thread isn't addressing the utility of currency but more importantly attempts to give you a new perspective on life.

Hard to answer honestly. My current studies are in the field of engineering - because I love understanding mathematics and physics; so regardless I'm going to make money.

But..I love money because I love cars and I need money for cars and upgrading cars :D

No point the view is completely childish. I don't know but I'm going to assume it talks about a utopian state where everyone does whatever they want and takes whatever they want. Firstly this wouldn't work because some jobs are higher demand than others, thus why some people make more money and some people make less money, Secondly people would be greedy when there is no system to tell them its bad, hording resources is a primal instinct that was of significant importance then but is actually counterproductive now.

If you're going to refuse to address ( or even veiw ) the concept the thread was made about then you're spamming.

You've made up your mind before you even examined it. That is ignorance.

Build a log cabin somewhere where I can see a lot of stars at night. I'd like to live with nothing but the basic necessities, my books, and my guitar
