How to Lock a door from the inside?

Hey today after coming home from work I found that my mom changed my doorknob to one without a lock, taking away the last bit of freedom I had. I am a senior in HighSchool and cant wait to get the hell out of here, but since I cant leave yet id like to make my stay a bit more enjoyable with abit of privacy.

What im asking is if anyone knows how to lock a door that swings in that doesnt have a lock. Id like something other than putting a chair or anything like that infront of it to make it unopenable. If anyone knows how to make the door knob itself unturnable that would be amazingly helpful. Thanks

 

I would say use a door wedge if you are in the room, other wise you would have to fit a lock, The type of wedge that I would think would be cost effective can be found on the link below fro a site I found.

Would a door wedge really do much good? Maybe a combo of the door wedge plus a chair? Be careful she might just remove the door all together.

If it was handle i'd say unscrew the handle and take the metal rod out and just reinsert the rod when you want out, but seems its a knob the only thing I can think of is door wedge.

 

other than what has already been suggested a screw in lock if your able to make a screw hole or 2 in your wall. or if u got the money to waste tape [duck tape or better] will work make sure u have a window or some form of ventilation lol

 

A wedge wouldn't be so effective (in the long-term) if it's placed underneath the door as someone could poke it out with a broom handle or even someone's shoe if that person were to chip away at it with their toe.

 

I'd be careful trying to keep her out after she takes the lockable handle off. In my personal experience parents will just take your door down lol fml glad I'm in college now

 

Chair works well in my experience.

 

The hotel chain locks can be installed from the inside easily and are among the most durable locks to ramming on the door and such. Other than that just put a bar between the wall and your door if you only need the lock when you are home or you can put a dresser in front.

A chain lock. They're easy to install, and they need some real force to snap! Unless she has a decent set of bolt croppers.

A chain lock or the thing stated above would probably be the best.
Alternatively a DIY ghetto version is putting a binder under the door as the door wedge as it molds to the position, you may have to buy some duct tape or a rubber strap (Can be gotten from a old tire, edges of some chairs and more) and putting it on the bottom.

 

It would be nice to have something that I could electronically unlock from the outside or something like that, because even if I add a chain to my door it wont stop my mom from going in my room while im at school / work and take it out.

Dependant on budget , just do as she did, go buy a new door handle with a lock and install it when shes out.

 

I would really like to get anotehr door handle but I wouldnt put it past her to wip out a little dewalt saw and cut around the knob just so she can get in, shes that conrolling. Is there anything that can be done to the hindges to make the door unopenable / harder to open. Or even a prank of some sort to do to the door if she opens it, besides the water on top and falling on her

 

I would personally just talk to your mum and explain your old enough and you are entitled to at least SOME privacy in the house. My door doesn't have a lock but mine still respect my privacy (most of the time >.<)

 

My friend used to put a key under his door and it was enough to jam it shut, maybe try that. Door stoppers are cheap as hell, too.
