Should I mention RWT on college application?

I know this is going to come off as trollish or idiotic, but srsly. I made a grand of gold selling, do you think that would come off as innovative and creative, or would it come off as creepy as fuck and sketchy? I would not necessarily say runescape, maybe digital currency trading?

 

I think it would really be up the the interpretation of whoever is reading through your college application. I would add it, saying that you deal with customers etc..

Word it professionally about business or some shit, but yeah, if you feel that you need it.

It's illegal, don't. Simply say you provide online services in the gaming market, or something. Don't mention selling gold or real world trading. You're pretty much saying on your job interview "Yes, I'm part of a black market".

Edit; I simply thought profiting from someone elses game on a large scale was against some law or another. Sorry.

 

Put it on your application only if you've felt as if it's developed you as a person. Has it given you a liking towards business? If so, it wouldn't hurt I guess.

Its not illegal. Learn your shit before telling people misinformation, its against game rules but there is no outright law pertaining to digital currency at ALL. This is for the united states anyways, i doubt NZ (where you seem to be from) has made such an outrageous law either .

OP Go ahead and use it, just word it in a way where it emphasizes that you saw a business opportunity while playing a video game and seized it and made real world profit off of it. It would show you are good at seizing opportunities when they present themselves and have a big picture view in life. I wouldnt include the monetary amounts, you dont want to come off as gloating. I would strongly recommend that you follow the guidelines that Rwn, Nick, and nodnar stated. However, I would somehow incorporate the word "volunteered" and say because of your "local volunteering" or whatever you prefer to use, you allowed the company to earn $1,000. Colleges for the most part are more interested in seeing community involvement rather than work experience. So it would be wise to say it was a local online fund raising event of sorts, completely misconstrue what you were about to say and fine tune it to what colleges truly want to hear.

 

I wouldn't but thats just me. I keep runescape and gold selling and all that shit not affiliated with my real life world(that actually matters). Whether the internet, who gives a fuck; to a certain extent though of course

It depends how you word it but unless the person reading your application is a former Jagex employee it couldn’t hurt you.

 

Yes, I think you should however I wouldn't mention it was a black market as such. Many people associate black markets with illegalities, and of course selling Runescape gold isn't illegal so don't let people have the negative connotations of 'black market' ringing in their head when you are telling them about it.

Try and phrase it differently, people love to hear of smart and entrepreneurial ways of making money. I don't see how it could impact you negatively if you worded it a bit better!

if they want to know how you made the $, and you don't want to say it, maybe they think you made it through illigal activity

I wouldn't to be honest. If they ask what you did, would you really feel comfortable telling them you broke the game rules to make your cash?

 

I'm not sure $1,000 is enough money to mention.

 

I've sold over 12 bill. I've included that I "I have my own online business, I handle a constant flow of new and familiar customers, required understanding of supply and demand, and up-selling, and time management.

Basically make it sound like a generic "business" while playing with words. Tell them what they want to hear, without making yourself look too bad in any situatuon they may ask you in an interview

Actually you are breaking a contract with Jagex, by agreeing to their TOS you agree to what is referred to as a Shrinkwrap Contract - same thing with TOS of any software you install or any site you join. Legal prosecution can be brought against you. You are contractually obligated to follow their rules after agreeing with them, assuming the contract is a sound contract and I am sure it is. So you are in breach of contract.


I still hold my opinion:

By wording it professionally, what are you going to do if they ask for some sort of proof? Especially if you're going for like an MBA or something. It's going to seem hella fishy if you log into Sythe or some other black market.
