Honestly, it's sad to think that shit like this isn't uncommon, but I think it was just pure coincidence that he died. Granted, he should've done something in regards to his statements, but he's a criminal. It's not easy for a cop to trust a criminal...duh.

Job is to serve and protect, and what happened to "innocent until proven guilty" The cop should have called EMS or brought him to the hospital.

That's pretty fucked up, but I don't blame the cops, because if I was in the cops position, I wouldn't take the criminal seriously either. :|

Then, for the sake of humanity, do not become a cop.

Again. It's not like all cases turn out to be this serious. I'm not sticking up for the cop. I'm just simply saying that I'm sure this same scenario has been faked many times before maybe leading to the death of a cop.

what do you mean "leading to the death of a cop" The guy isnt a threat anymore hes already been patted down and handcuffed. First he may be a criminal but he didn't deserve to die in the back of that car. IMO its sad to say the Cop will most likely get away with this crime.

In the defense of cops, because i see nothing wrong with this situation disparaging the slight neglect of the detainee.

As any emergency personnel know, if you're talking you're obviously breathing. This would lead officers to believe that he is in fact faking it.

If you carefully listen to the video he slurs his word which would give the impression to the officers that he is in some form of intoxicated.

Unless he stated at the point of his arrest he does indeed have a form of sickle cell mutation they are in no way held liable. The video states that he was taken down by force, if this is in fact true the officers would have lead with the statement "do you need to be checked by a paramedic?" as the evidence is evident, he looks in no way abused therefore ruling out police brutality.

I don't believe the officers should be punished, of course they should learn from their mistake and make a public apology, they don't need to be fired nor does the police chief need to resign as the town is requesting of him. They all did their job accordingly.

It's pretty fucked up, yes, but they probably get this every time they make an arrest (or something similar) and 99% of the time nothing happens, it just so happened this time that he was being genuine. I don't know what could have been done to stop it though? I'm pretty sure an ambulance would have been required and they themselves take over 8 minutes to arrive, usually. So, who knows what would have happened otherwise.

Though I do think it's pretty horrible that someone else suffered and ended up dead just because other suspects have 'cried wolf'.

They did, they're not acting paramedics.

This is wrong, as a lifeguard I know that just because you can talk does not necessarily mean one isn't having complications of breathing. Most people in a state of panic (be it choking or otherwise) will say they cannot breathe even though they are drawing in minimal air to say those words.

Slur of speech and asking for help saying he can't breathe? Could be choking or almost choking on vomit for all they know.

Wrong, they will be held liable as it is already deemed homicide. The man clearly asked for help and was ignored by authorities that could have helped him.

No, they will obviously need to be tried for murder and stripped of their positions (the police officers anyways). Letting someone die due to negligence isn't a "learning experience" for someone if you're an emergency personnel. Or for anyone for that matter.

Most decently trained officers now a days are required to have basic paramedic training.

At the end of the day, if you're a Police Officer why on earth would you risk your life by trying to give medical help to a criminal who has very conveniently fallen ill whilst being arrested. You have no idea what he's going to do to you. The number of people who try this on must be through the roof. Also, the man wouldn't have even been in this position if he had just kept within the law and been a decent member of society. Yes it's unfortunate but I'd much rather a criminal who had broken the law died than a Police Officer who was just doing his job.

People like you that kick up such a fuss about stuff like this are the reason that we even have such a ridiculous number of crimes going on in the world. Every time something like this happens and the Police are held responsible and told they handled the situation badly, every Police Officer in the world gets a little less inclined to do their job properly. Every criminal who see's this is going to think 'Hey, if I get arrested I can just pretend I can't breathe and then attack the cop when he tries to help!'. I'm not saying that all criminals deserve to die but you have to look at the knock on effects of what has happened. There is much more to it than a man tragically dieing.

    Innocent until proven guilty.

The man was handcuffed and completely subdued, there was no way the man was a threat.

How dare we ask for justice? Cops aren't above the law you know.

Or every cop doing their job as they should keep doing their job as they should. Maybe this is a reminder to them that they aren't above the law.

As said above there is no way this man could have caused harm to them.

    Got anything else?

He was caught doing a robery, pretty guilty sounding to me. Also if he has a illness such as the one he has it's his own fault for being a dumbass and putting himself in danger[ robbing houses] I know most of the people around where I live have several weapons for break ins [ bats guns etc. ] what if he got hit with a weapon? same thing would have happened , in the end its his own fault maybe if there is a 2nd life or something he won't be such a dumbass next time. Cops did the right thing

ok then mr all knowing id like you to become a cop so that when the criminal [my whole family are criminals and they all do it] say "help i can't breathe" or something about their heart or anything you can be like " well golly he must be serious" you can then go try to help then they can beat your ass and leave you bleeding in a ditch or dead.

People don't like to get caught and put in a cage and most will do anything in their power to get away.

    EDIT: to mage
I also noticed you said the guy was hand cuffed so he was not a threat. It only takes a second to kick a cop in the knee or hit him with the door to drop him and flip ur arms under your legs then you got yourself a choking device

or if he was double jointed\broke his wrist\thumb in the past he could easily enough slip out of the hand cuffs and use them as a weapon + have his hands free. you clearly do not know how criminals work kudos to your mom and dad for keeping you this sheltered in this harsh world.

Why is that a reason to endanger yourself? Clearly if he was a suspect who had to be arrested forcefully he was considered a danger.

I wouldn't take the risk. Anything could have happened, you have absolutely no reason to trust someone who clearly doesn't appear to have any reservations about breaking the law. Handcuffs aren't a guarantee that you're not going to get injured.

Obviously they're not above the law, but they are not doing anything wrong by making a decision not to endanger their lives. I bet you that if the Officer had died in this case then someone would have made a thread saying he took a stupid risk.

Yes but it's not realistic to expect that is it? If you're worried that you could be held responsible for someone getting injured or dieing you're going to focus harder than you should to prevent it. The Police are already forced into being too 'nice' in their approach to their work, you don't need to make it any more difficult. One of the reasons that the UK Police don't want to carry guns is because they don't want to have to deal with the consequences of using them. Every time someone got hurt there would be a public outcry. It's exactly as what happened when Mark Duggan was shot. He was waving a gun around and the Police are blamed for shooting him. My point is that you can't blame the Police for playing it safe, they need to be able to do their job without worrying about getting into trouble for something which at the end of the day wasn't their fault.

Surely it's better that this kind of thing happens occasionally than criminals get away with even more than they already do?

    Again, you don't know that.

practice what you preach just because you're cuffed don't mean your subdued also please re-read my above statement it's clear that you either skipped over it or had nothing to hold up your side of the debate.

I'm assuming life-guarding the YMCA doesn't require any type of licenses because you're clueless. If there was any obstructions to the airway he would have not had the ability to slur, let alone talk. You've obviously never heard someone struggling to breathe.

    Answered above.

Incorrect, polish up your basic knowledge of state and federal laws.

False once again, it is not negligence if there are no evident signs of struggle. As police officers they've had every type of person get out of every possible bit of trouble with every excuse known to man, as stated above, the mans air way was not obstructed at the time, it developed.

Emt* not paramedic, and false once again. Every police officer is required basic first aid, nothing more. Hence why laws cover police officers under the good samaritan law while preforming life saving activities.

Ok since you want me to reply to this, I will.
Yes it was obviously stupid to break in to a house, and if his death was ultimately due to self defense you'd be right. But it wasn't, his death was due to neglect of symptoms. And maybe the cops wouldn't have been able to save his life in the end even if they did take action, but the problem is they didn't. These people will be charged for this crime.

Ooo imaginary fight scenes, I love it.

More like you've watched too many movies. I can guarantee most people would try to run away if anything. The person was outnumbered by people with fire arms, who no doubt are trigger happy.

Just because he was arrested forcefully doesn't mean he was a danger. We probably don't have all the details anyways

Sure it's no guarantee, but it's also under equally unlikely circumstances that the person would do anything but run in this situation.
