Politicians should have their wages tripled.

Wait before you get the pitchforks, hear me out. I am talking from the perspective of someone who lives in the UK here, but I am sure it applies to the US as well.

How could we justify tripling the pay of these people?
- This is exactly the problem, only people who want power currently go into politics, there is no drive for anyone truly intelligent to go into politics. The brightest Scientists and mathematicians instead become bankers or accountants because obviously, that is were all the money is.
If we were to massively increase the money that politicians earn, then the current useless power hungry morons who only have winning the next election on their minds will be outclassed by the talent that is brought in by money. MPs are not paid enough as it is already, that is one of the main reasons behind things such as the expenses scandal happening, it was a way for the smarter ones to basically increase their wage to a fairer amount for their position.

Wouldn't it not be better to have people with brains in government, rather than people who are good at being driven by a desire for power? If being a politician was a prestigious job, rather than something for people who couldn't get on any University course than politics went into then I think there would be benefits for everyone.

 

90% of the Politicians are stupid and have no brains and all they desire is power, which is why everyone does politics if giving the chance, power.
I see no reason to triple the wage if i had the option to, i would lower it three times so that people with actual brain and intelligence would come and change something in our society, he does it for the people, not the money.

 

It wouldn't work that way. Increasing money isn't going to draw out intelligent people, it is going to draw out people even more selfish than our current round of degenerates. Also how do you justify paying them more? Are you going to raise the taxes? What are you going to do?

The average Senator/Politician (Considering they're starting FRESH.) Should have an income of 60-200 thousand dollars. They have millions because of a gift here and there.

 

scientists and mathematicians don't do banking and higher professional jobs for the money they do it because of several reasons in most cases they do it because they enjoy the line of work, bankers enjoy the public interaction whereas mathematicians and scientists love solving a problem and enjoy the challenge and reap the rewards of success after solving a problem.

Many scientists aren't that rich they do science for reputation purposes and build a career on it. They want to increase their knowledge as much as they can and have an interest in learning new things.

Politicians do their job because they enjoy having a larger role in how the country is run, they also like the reputation they gain from their peers. Most politicians don't have that much power on their own but they represent the interests of their community and enjoy hearing them out. The average pay for a politician is a little over middle class but the health care and government support are very worthwhile.

Also scientists and mathematicians wouldn't be good in politics considering most of their work is non social in most cases.

Most Politicians don't know what's going on. They leech off their advisers and relay the information from them to us.

 

I am speaking on behalf of all the scientists, mathematicians, and politicians out there. You are assuming people choose their occupation based upon pay wage. In many cases, that is just not true.

 

obviously it is not true, research science is one of the worst payed jobs going. I am talking about the ones that do not want to become teachers/researchers (perfectly respectable/admiral choices I should add), but rather those that after University look for as high paying job they can get.
It is exactly the problem that politicians are not in it for anything other than power in most cases. It drives them to make bad but popular decisions for the next election.

US politicians do make a lot more than UK ones.
And if they had their pay increased, they would not have to accept 'gifts', and we would have a much less corrupt system.

Greed knows no bounds. Are you saying that a person making $500,000 a year is less likely to take a free million dollars than someone making $100,000? That is crazy.

In the United States our politicians (congress specifically) already make about 200k+ a year. Nearly all of them move from public service to very highly paid lobbying jobs once they retire. More money isn't the answer. Less money (like <100k per year) and term limits would get people in who actually wanted to make a difference and didn't just want power and money.

 

Senators currently make 100k a year (salary wise, last time i heard). Not only do they make a huge amount of money but they get government benefits like retirement and now healthcare. Not only that, but they vote on how much they make and the people have no say in it. And If you would think a little bit more, that even if we pay them $1,000,000 a year that if someone gifts them money directly or for a campaign there not going to say "No, im just going to do this for the better of the people, and use my own out of pocket money instead."This is in the US, not the UK.

If you really wanted to see a difference you would set term limits and fight to make no tax cuts for millionaires, the one's who usually gift them this money to sway the way they want.

 

how about you just elect three times as many politicians and have their presiding areas be smaller so that communities can have greater control over their MP's?

as for the wages per mp increasing, I dont think that we should be trying to attract solely selfish people to politics.

 

Politicians are already highly paid..
Also scientist are good at science and math because that's what they've studied.
I am doing math in university, that doesn't mean I'm a genius. If I were put in a politicians shoes I wouldn't have a clue what to do..

 

Do you really want a politician whom is driven to their position because of money? That seems like just another corrupt politician to me..

A politician that really wants to help people won't get this job because of the money.

Nope. They make nearly double that plus they get free healthcare for life (I believe).

 

I Dont think they should be paid more man, they already make enough money. They do a good part for us, but people only get into politics because of the money. If anything, they should lower it a bit.
