Anarchy Online - The Original Sci-Fi MMO

Anarchy Online is a Sci-fi MMO released in 2001 by funcom (creators of the popular game TSW and AOC) and is an interesting bit of MMO history.

With the worst MMO launch to date, it's still running now with some of the most unique mechanics in the MMO market.
Instead of a level based item equip system, it uses the point expenditure system, similar to games such as Fallout 3 or KOTOR I/II, but
much more expansive with over 80 skills to put points into.

With this point based equipment system, one can use buffs, implants, perks, or other gear to boost your stats to unbelievable heights and equip incredible gear.
Making it the most advanced equipment system in any MMO. Not for the faint of heart!

I personally love playing this game and pushing my characters to their limits, a few points here and there can ladder up to some incredible feats, and great accomplishments.
The only problem with the game however is its slipping population, I mean if you think runescape is dying, then you've honestly never seen a dying game.
But me personally have faith in the company, that the new engine will be released and the game will again be on par with the modern MMOs, making the game flourish again.

was a big fan of AoC and was the first to get a DT to level 80, funcom deff can out out some fun stuff. might have to try it.

 

Yah, this was the game that basically established funcom as a competitive game company.

I used to play this back in the day. Never really got too good though, but I did find it entertaining at the time.

I played for a while. If I remember correctly I have a level 80 something Nanotechnician.

I'd love to go back to the game, but in its current dying state and outdated graphics, it just isn't worth the $15 a month they're still charging.

They were supposed to have been doing a graphical overhaul a few years back, but I don't think it ever got done. As far as I know the game is basically dead now. Tis a shame.

I remember I had my flying bike thing, and I had this awesome purple/black nanotech robe. I used to listen to like Gridstream radio or something; they were a strictly Anarchy Online radio and were awesome.

Probably one of the best Sci-Fi MMO's I ever played while it was still truly alive.

 

Well it's still going, (well I'm playing anyways) and the graphics engine is still legitimately being worked on.

Server merge will be happening soon as well.

 

Still being worked on? By what a one man team? By the time the graphics overhaul is done it'll be outdated again lol.

I'd come play again if it was only $5, and last I heard AO only had a few thousand active players.
