What I mean by this is, servers in common Steam games, such as TF2, CS:S or even CS:GO.

Now I'm not an expert on these, so I'm not sure what the actual upkeep of one of these servers is, or how labor intensive it is to keep it up and running. I have read up on the idea though, and from what I've seen, most of these servers end up with extraordinary profits from either donations or users purchasing fancy hats, items, guaranteed spots or other things.

Not only would this provide Sythe.org with an extra stream of revenue, it would allow us to really establish our self to other markets, and communities that before wouldn't even visit this site. We would draw users to our site, looking to buy certain things on our servers, making accounts here and hopefully some stick around for the community, like most other active users here on this site.

The servers would also be home to an array of community events we could hold. Because we would have our own server, we would be able to hold certain events such as tournaments and be able to control every aspect of it.

From what I've seen, I honestly think this would be a great opportunity for Sythe to gain extra revenues, bring in some definitely needed new members, and create a place the community can play together.

Do you mean dedicated servers? Or something like that? So basically like, a dedicated server like the ones in Call of Duty 4 and Counterstrike? I dunno, first time I've ever heard of something suggested like that.

It would really depend on the game, what games that support dedicated servers out there have a high enough amount of interest on Sythe? *looks to x339*

This would be easy advertising, and would be a lot of fun. I am behind it 100%.

    Yes.

And my idea of this would be less of a "Oh well a lot of people on Sythe like CS, let's make a CS thing for the sole purpose of us playing together.", but more of a "Well there is a large amount of people who like to play TF2. TF2 has a huge black market aspect of it, with all of the hats, weapons, strange items, paints and whatnot. Let's get users to use our server and find our site, and direct them here for anything relating to the server, in hopes that they become part of our market".

Idea sounds great but someone trusted would need to host the servers and expand from just cs.

This. Just having "Sythe.org" somewhere in the Servers name will bring a lot of traffic. It'll be fun to play against some Sythe members too.

I was thinking more along the lines of official, that way we could sell certain things on these server to fuel the site.

Having a user sell things for the server though would work just as well, it's just a matter of would Sythe allow another user to be directed here to purchase certain things for a server.

Not really sure if it matters but I do support something like this. Obviously we shouldn't make one if only like five people are going to use it.

Like I said, it's more to draw people who play those games in then it is for us to go play on it, although that is a big plus that we would have the luxury to have our own game server.

Awesome idea toast! I think this would be an excellent add. Wonder if anyone will have a reason not to do it?

Fully support, private servers are a great way for community members to join up and have fun. You can't charge to play because then you're a target for copyright breech, but simply running them in most cases isn't prohibited.

You can run a fully dedicated server for about 50$ a month, with good bandwidth and such. Sythe would definitely increase his site's usability by adding something like this. Additionally, providing miniscule ingame benefits to donators that do not give much of an advantage will increase the potential for donations. All in all a good idea.

The only problem is who would run it? As far as I've known, Matthew is a good coder but isn't exactly systems admin savvy, and Sythe hasn't ever displayed an interest in server technology...

Either way I hope this is pursued.

I'm not saying you have to pay to play on the server, I was just saying special bonuses can be purchased at small prices to generate revenue to help Sythe, at least generate enough to break even.

To clarify, that's what I was supporting.

Do you have any idea how much this would cost Richard on a per Month/Year basis? Compiling all the necessary information might make the suggestion more likely to be approved.

Dedicated servers don't USUALLY cost that much per year to run and maintain, unless you're going for some next generation super i7 server or whatever.

Still wondering what PC game out there we could use to advertise and play on. COD4 maybe?

Well obviously the more common games out there. I was thinking CS:GO and TF2 to start out since those seem to be fairly popular Steam games, and also two that most of the members of the community have.

Like I stated before, I know jack shit about this stuff, besides the fact that it would be a decent idea. I've looked at a couple different sites that you pay, and they give you a server, much like how you purchase a ventrilo server, and it runs about $1 per person per month, so a 24 person server would be about $23.99 a month which isn't that bad assuming we make some, or all of that back.

Pretty sure there are ways to flat out run your own server, just like you can for Minecraft, but I wouldn't know how to go about doing that. I'd assume that would be the much cheaper but a lot higher maintenance method.

if you're willing to get the numbers IE pricing, i'd be willing in the next month or so pay for a server, and have a weekly CD give-away.
