Jagex Cracking Down

I've noticed lately jagex has been shutting down youtube channels for posting videos of private servers and threatening private server owners with legal battles. Seems like they realize that EoC is a fuck up and people are flocking to private servers and quitting runescape. This is annoying first they take away the runescape that people enjoy now they are trying to shut down the private servers people are switching to.

 

There is still no copy right issues, because java is not owned by jagex.. so you can't get in any legal trouble for using java to make/code a game.

 

We'll apparently they are getting owners/higher staff of private servers to disassociate them selves with servers by either threatening them or by taking some kind of legal action.

 

I don't know this, I'm just making a guess here. I think that maybe JaGeX has realized the potential to lose veterans of RS due to the EOC update so they are cracking down on private servers. They are able to do this as some private servers have not altered the RS code significantly enough or something so RS is able to copy right their asses.

 

Yeah that's what I'm thinking but they are managing to shut the server down just getting some of the owners to leave the "company" and let other people run it.

 

Java is not copyright, but I'm sure that the use of "dragon scimitar, abyssal whip, chaotic rapier" that look exactly like the Jagex versions and have the exact uses of the Jagex versions violates at least a few intellectual property rights. Just like the written English language is not protected by copyright, but using English to publish someone else's work is illegal.

 

People should at least wait to see what EoC does. It's most probably going to be changed a lot more than it was in the beta. There are far too many complaints for Jagex to go through with it fully, I think they even realize by now it's a mistake.

I love jagex and can't wait for the eoc. Those youtubers are basically advertising a game with runescape codes. They can be losing money and it's against their rules.

 

I'm fine with the youtube thing, they can only do it if you mention the name of the private server/the fact that it is a private server. I just think they are desperate to get players back.

 

I put it in the same terms as a book, books authors don't copyright the paper, ink etc. They copyright the contents. If someone where to make a book with a similar name, a logo that could be misinterpreted for the original book and pretty much the same story line.. They'd be sued for each individual thing, most likely sued for damages etc. If I were a private server owner, I wouldn't really want to be going into battle with a company that has millions to throw at closing you down.

 

How are they desperate? Most players who play a rsps, still play runescape. From my knowledge, private servers aren't something jagex support. Since it's stealing their codes.

In my opinion I think that it is like music. People can play cover songs all they want as long as they don't claim they're the original artist and try to sell it as such. They can remix and reproduce these songs as long as you don't claim it is the original. Private servers take the elements of runescape and they change it around - add and subtract things. It is a remix of the original.

 

Pretty sure jagex doesn't allow re-creations of there game with their coding.

Why waste your time on a fake? It can brake down easily, it's not fully supported and when things go wrong you can't find an answer.

At least that's how I see it.

 

I played 2006scape throughout the Pre-Alpha. Sure, I wasn't exactly dedicated to the game but I enjoyed it quite a lot. I've basically quit RuneScape too. I really do hope Jagex don't try to sue 2006scape. Currently, there Youtube Channel is still intact.

 

Neither do artists, but yet you see numerous unofficial remixes and mash-ups. It all comes down to fair use and how far you can push fair use. You're allowed a certain amount of copyrighted content.

Why attack these two or three people who might have 500 - 1000 users at most? Wasting time being litigious isn't making runescape any better. Jagex has to realize that they can only push a player base so far before the player base moves on to green pastures.

 

Weather you play real runescape or a private server your wasting your time either way but that's the point it's a game. And because there's no point in playing runescape when I won't be playing after the EoC update because I don't enjoy the new combat system. It seems like the only reason they would go after these servers is to try and get people back to runescape.

 

You're wasting your time playing a game that might not have a bright future. It can be shutdown at any time and there can be many reasons for that. As with jagex, It will be up for quite some time and they have a company behind to make sure that it does happen.
