IRL help needed. Runescape has taken over my life.

    Hey,

I cancelled my runescape membership a week ago, but i am still obsessed with the game. Every day i cannot help but play at least 5 hours of Runescape Private servers a day. Thoughts of the game flood my head in class, which has been preventing me from concentrating at all, and i have been failing tests.

I started playing Runescape in late 2007. Back then i would just go on runescape for about 30 minutes daily to chat with IRL friends and do fun stuff. My playtime then grew to 1 hour, then 3 hours, and then guess what.
By 2008 i was playing for a good 6-12 hours a day on weekends. I did manage to quit RS back then due to boredom of the game ( i had fun stuff to do irl)
but in 2009, when my friend persuaded me to begin playing again, i fell into an endless void of addiction that has pretty much ruined me in the last 1-1 and a half years.
When i came back in 2009, i was still doing fine at school, often getting A in every subject. Then my standards began to slip. I began to put off homework and take on a more lazy attitude towards school, and by 2010, thoughts of the game filled my head on a daily basis. By mid 2011 my addiction got so bad that i stopped doing homework. My concentration levels took a steep drop, i constantly daydreamed in class about my next fucking pixelated goal. Even though i was a regular botter, i managed to find time to play for at least 5 hours a day. No exceptions. Something as stupid as doing a "Floor 40 L" was more important than vital maths studies the day before a test.
So by the end of that year, my grades had slipped from B+ to C's. I even got D in maths.
Recently it has gotten worse. Thoughts of the game still flood my thinking in class. All i am thinking about is when i can get home, jump on the computer and play some more Runescape. Now i can not go for a singular day without playing a runescape private server. The addiction has taken over my life. Two months ago i was informed that i was in the bottom 5% of students in my year level. A big slap to the face.

In the last month, i have been making efforts to improve my grades (one of these being cancelling my runescape membership.) I managed to do a good deal of hard work and turn in an English essay for an A+ grade, and i am honestly very surprised I am still capable of doing that. I'm also still popular at school, so i have lots of friends.

I think it is time for me to cut down on this addiction, even if it's only a small cut-back. I also need help on concentrating in class.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    P.S i am not fat.

This happened to me, but with minecraft. Very similar ordeal. Failing class, tests, and getting my family mad at me. You have few choices.

You need to flat out quit, so you have 3 options:
1.Change your password to a bunch of random numbers and forget about it. It works, but is not very fun :p.
    2. Do a youtube giveaway, or give it to someone on here maybe. I would imagine this is a good account you have.
3.Find a trusted friend, and have them change you password until it is ok to play again. Like in the summer or on vacations.

Ok, then all you can do is forget about it, this game is a never ending black hole, and all they want is your money. Start my taking out that signature of yours. Does your PServer have a forum?

Block all access to the most used private server ports 43594, 5555, 43595. Use a file locker to lock the files with a random password.

Edit your hosts file to block yourself from connecting to the top rs/rsps sites, mopar, r-s, rL, sythe, zybez, etc. Block them all. Lock that file as well.

Uninstall Java on your computer, this would mean that you won't be able to play the private servers, as well as the official RS.

When you get the urge to play runescape at your house, go outside and just run for length distances 5+ miles or like 30 minutes out and then turn back. Don't puss out on your run either, just run and try not to walk. When you get I can pretty much guarantee you'll be too tired to do anything. Or take up a sport! I know that wrestling takes up every bit of extra time during the winter season. I would get home and immediately eat then sleep and repeated that for a couple months, it broke any addiction I had.

I personally think that before cutting yourself off by removing access (getting banned, changing account information to random numbers), you need to cut yourself off mentally. Otherwise you might just end up seeing yourself back on the game via another source. Whenever you get a thought about rs/p-servers, you should think back to how it killed your grades and basically took over your life in a negative way. If you want to talk about it, [email protected], i'm always open.

To put it simply: You are addicted to video games, and you need to sort it out. My advice would be to give your PC to a friend or ask your parents to take it somewhere you can't access. Don't go looking for other games to play as you'll run the risk of getting addicted to them too. If you need your PC for school work or something, then just use the computers at school.

Try lying on your bed and read a book, take your mind somewhere else. Also, why don't you try going out with your friends more often? It's good to see you quit your RS membership, it is a waste of money at the end of the day.

That's how I managed to quit spending so much time at the computer.

You don't need to be fat to start working out, you can still be thin and be unfit, which you likely are spending upto 12 hours on a computer at a time.
Try it out and see what happens, you'll never know until you have tried (try for at least 2 weeks so you can get a routine and won't give up).

I don't know if this will work for runescape, but it sure did make me quit smoking.

Go without runescape for a day. During that time instead, sit your ass in front of your priorities, even if you will think of nothing but runescape. In fact, have someone tempt you to play the game, but don't.
Think. It's that easy, all you have to do is not go in front of the computer and turn the game on.

Repeat this the next day, and the next.

When I quit smoking like this, I always felt great the day after I didn't smoke a cigarette. I had dreams that I smoked and immediately regretted it, but woke up feeling like a boss because they were just dreams.

    It's worth a try :p

Go outside and run around the block till you're knackered.
Find a playground, do 20-40 push ups.
Go onto an empty pavement, do jump squats up and down the pavement.
Find monkey bars (or anything high up you can grab), do 10-20 pull ups.
Run around the block till your throat gets really really dry and hungry.
    Go home, stuff your face.
Chug down a heap of water/milk.
    Shower.

^By the end of all that, you should be too tired to do anything but sleep :)
PS. only do that when you have no homework or have finished.

Hi. I understand your problem. It's obvious that you are suffering from video game addiction. Well, to be honest, it's actually pretty normal and is in fact common among most youngsters with computers and internet access. As a matter of fact, I personally used to suffer from video game addiction as well.

To the point that I actually got the lowest ranking in my school exam. I was really close to dropping out. This happened a long time go. Seeing that I had very little hope left, my loving mother made the final attempt of helping me by getting a tuition teacher. I was lucky as it was my tuition teacher that changed my life. He asked me if I ever got an A for any tests.

I said yes. Like you, I got As before I got into video game addiction. He told me that whatever method I used to get the As, I have to keep doing it. Whatever I am doing that's getting me a F, I should stop doing them as they are only causing harm. I took his advice and started studying hard. I even went to the extent of asking my parents to put a password on MY computer, preventing me from using it.

It was extremely tough at first. But you cannot give up and you must be patient. Eventually, you will get used to studying hard and you will be able to fight your addiction. Remember, you must not give up on yourself. I know runescape is an extremely addictive game.

You don't have to deprive yourself from playing runescape(like how I did when I was around your age). You can still play, but in moderation. Use alarm clocks to know when you have to stop playing and don't get into quests and all when your time is about to be up. Instead, watch some videos or something so that when your time is up, you won't be in the middle of a quest. I hope you get what I am saying and I hope I helped in one way or another. Thanks for sharing and good luck mate ;)

go find a hobby/fun things to keep you occupy irl. I'm sure there are plenty of options out there, just whether you wanna give it a try or not. Appreciate the art of life and people, distance yourself away from the computer more often and soon you'll get used to it, and even start to enjoy yourself more.

if you still can't quit the damned private servers, ask your parents to restrict you..
