Wondering why ashes are 250+ gp each?

The day is June 28, 2009. I'm bored with some friends and I had just bought some ashes at 5gp each to use at the Warrior's Guild for that shotput method for tokens. I started spelling out words and other offensive stuff with items on the minimap. I thought it was pretty funny, so I bought 1k ashes. They were so cheap, I bought 2k more for my friends.

Later, my friend irl comes over to my house. I wanted to show off how much money I had spare. I was quitting and there was a trade limit, so I couldn't give away my money. Just for fun, since ashes were pretty cheap, I started out buying 100k ashes. Later, I realized that I could probably buy 1m ashes and still have plenty of spare money (I had 12m at the time.)

Days go by and eventually I achieve my 1m ashes. I put them into the Falador Drop Party box and they all left me. :( I only got a screenie of trying to buy 100k.

By the end of the 1m that I bought, I had increased the price, myself, up to 12gp each from 5gp. I suppose some merchanters picked up on that, so they kept increasing the price. I sure wish I'd have kept those 1m ashes, I'd love to have 250m right about now. -.-

    Any comments?

Jagex doesn't go around banning people who use Sythe.

Sythe can be a legit site, aslong as you're legit, they won't ban you.

Pic is dated July 01, 2009. And I'm not doing anything wrong on the site. Yeah, this is an RS black market site, but I'm just floating around the discussions. No reason to ban me. Besides, I realized I made the Sythe the same as my rs account after I had already made it. Oh well, I don't really mind. From what I can tell, if I keep paying for membership, my account is safe.

that sucks man, I used to collect drags axes when they were new out and were the same as rune axes just looked different and had better combat stats, i decided to sell them all to pay for skilling/combat gear and 2 days later they improved the woodcutting ability of the axes and they went up form like 900k each to 3.5m each i think. i was so mad, considering a mil was like $3-5 back then aswell

Also, ashes are that much for summoning and people use bonfires for firemaking exp now so theres a lot less ash in the game, the majority of ashes come from bots.

That's true. When I was playing, I had noticed they peaked at 120gp. I'm wondering who picked up 1m ashes to sell for about 5gp each, to be honest. The only thing in summoning it's used for is the Pheonix's Rise from the Ashes. And even then, they have to be on the ground. I doubt that's keeping the prices high. Bonfires are preventing any more from coming in the game; you're definitely right about that.

And that sucks about the axes dude. >_< I never really hear of anybody saying something like "Remember those tortoise shells that everyone thought were useless? I saved 6k of those in my bank and quit for a while. I came back and they were like 8k each."

I did something like that with buckets of water back in the day. I'd log in every day and update my offers in the GE to max, and every day the price would go up a cent. If I'd forget to update my offers for a day or two, the price would start to drop again.

Ashes are harder to get now, because everyone uses bonfires to level firemaking now.

    yeah, this.
Mate of mine was collecting ashes when they were 1-3gp each.
He had at least 10M of them! I wonder if he's still playing and what he did with that cash.

They went up mainly because they are used as ingredients for herblore, it wasn't only merchanters who brought the price up, a lot of people used serums to train 99 herblore. You could affect the price but these updates would have increased it more than merchanting.

    @Punjabi3
I'm not saying that I was the sole reason, but I did somewhat start a flame. Serums were out around this time for a while, so why were they stable at 2-3 gp until my mass purchase? Yes, people make serums to 99, but it didn't affect the price so much. When I bought all the ashes, the price rose. If I was keeping a log, I'd do the statistics on it and prove you wrong about that. Bonfires were probably not even a concept at the time, so bonfires didn't cause the increase at the time.
^summary: How can you say serums caused the increase if they were already out for a long time? Supplies don't increase randomly.

You are right about the bonfires, though, as I stated previously. Apparently there used to be bots who would make fires, then pick up all the ashes when they came to be ~50gp each. Bonfires somewhat demolished that.
