I don't think you'd need something too powerful if it's just for Uni. Personally, I wouldn't go for Macbooks, Windows is fine for me. Brand wise, I would go for something like Dell or ASUS, stay away from HP.

Do you have a budget in mind?

Well, since you would only use it for basic note taking and doing a bit of research online buying a Mac would be overkill for what you need it for. Stick with a nice windows laptop with something like 8GB of RAM or something so its fast and you can get what you need done quickly. Also try get a deal with some programs you might need such as Microsoft Office.

You could even buy a notebook for uni classes, don't go overkill with some very expensive computer.

If you have the money, I'd get an Ultrabook; lightweight is useful... take it from the guy who carries his 15 lb over-crapped laptop everywhere.

As long as it isn't a netbook, you should be fine... NO MACs! Waste of money...

A Dell or another solid laptop will be your best bet, trust me.

Macbooks are glorified facebook machines, the price you pay for one is absurd compared to the specs you receive in return, and unless you're a digital design major (Graphic Design, Advertising, or anything else heavy in Photoshop/Editting software) or a music major, you're better off with a windows laptop.

I have a notebook called "HP EliteBook 8640" - I had this laptop for when I went to Imperial College, to do a week's course on Space Medicine :), and it's more than capable of handling most processes, and even a few games :)

Macbook Air. I can't stand sitting in an auditorium with a heavy laptop on my legs.

^ that's part of the reason I was going with macs. Is there so much of a difference for the price? I just like the Mac OS a lot better. Price shouldn't be too much of a concern, I think, since I'll have it for the next six years.

MacBook Airs aren't so much different in price. I think the latest one is sold for around 1200 GBP. Which adds up to about $1800, I think. They're pretty good laptops. The only reason the Windows Warriors dislike them is that you do pay a pretty high amount.. well, it's almost extortionate for the specs you receive (generally, around double what you'd pay for a Windows computer), but they are pretty lightweight, which is what you want. And practically soundless, which is another thing. It is pretty embarrassing if you have a brick that makes an enormous racket.

I did not know that :). There's also like a 30% student discount or something right?

And about the specs... I don't need to be running 50 bots on it, I probably won't even game on it.

I'm not sure why there's so much hate against MacBooks. My sister has a 2009 MacBook pro with a core 2 duo processor which still works great even today.

Yeah apple gives very good student deals. The first time I bought my macbook pro I got a free ipod touch. The second time I got a printer.

I would go with the Mac personally :)

I love Unix based operating systems like OS X and the battery life, portability, and screen quality are impeccable on the newest line of MacBooks. If you have the money to spend, I'd say go for it!
