Could combat this by doing what Facebook does, and requiring you to add that person to your list of friends, or "notable users" whatever you want to call them, thus making it easy to get ahold of the people you already know, and just have them "add" you to their IM/messaging list(AND VICE VERSA) in order to be able to contact that person, so both parties will have to agree to come in contact on the site via IM messages.

Additionally, the desktop version of cometchat probably has a "friends list" function that only displays users who you'd like it to

Another decent idea would be a phone IM app that would allow you to use you're Sythe chatbox on you're phone, similar to what Facebook has. If the App isn't worth a shot, maybe a downloadable icon for you're desktop is in order too? Uses like MSN, except it's strictly Sythe based, and is it's own individual downloadable program. I'd be willing to fund the creation of such a tool once/if this idea is implemented. Facebook even has a downloadable icon. Why can't Sythe?

If there was a system in place that required two users to be "friends" in order to communicate, would that lighten the load on the server?

It would definitely at least help with scrolling through hundreds of online or active users.

Or as I suggested above. If there is a downloadable program where it is posted on Sythe for free and recommended for transactions, then there wouldn't even need to be a slight addition to the server. It would be it's own independant program where only the people who downloaded it(Strictly users on Sythe) can IM back and forth. That way, people have a safer option when trading, as it would more than likely require you to sign in with you're Sythe username and password. Although this will need to be well protected as well, considering the amount of attacks there would be to gain access to trades and Sythe accounts due to this program being offsite. Room for improvement though.

I support this idea. I disagree with ANYONE other than the people speaking with each other to be able to see the chat log, but having an instant messaging system here at Sythe could make trades a whole lot quicker, and you'll feel more safe doing your trades. Sort of like an IM like social networks use such as Facebook.

If it were a server, someone would have to run it, thus controlling everything and seeing everything; Correct me if I am wrong?

Sythe already monitors this(MUCH larger) server without scamming a single person. A smaller server wouldn't be but a penny on the ground to him.

Downloading the program shouldn't be obligatory though, part of the ease of use and a key part in facilitating its popularity is having it readily available at any given point to every user who's simply viewing the website. Having a desktop download option would definitely be helpful, but some users may not be able to download programs onto their computer (whether because it's not theirs or they're at a public buidling like a library). As such, we shouldn't forego the onsite feature. Another problem is that, having it on your desktop doesn't mean it won't encumber the server, it still has to be hosted on sythe's server.

Another function we need to be sure to have is a ban option for people who abuse the system, either by flooding, attempting to hack, or mass advertising. I'm sure it's built into the cometchat's core programming, but if not, it's a must.

Depending on how much it is per month, I wouldn't mind going halfers with Grave. I wouldn't have access to the server, I'd just probably send him money.

This would be a disaster waiting to happen. If a mod/admin decided to go rogue, or the database was compromised, the attacker would have access to hundreds (thousands?) of trade details, from account recovery information to people's addresses.

I think people should stick with Windows Live.

I agree with Jimmy, unless there is a way to 100% secure/encrypt the data (so NO ADMIN or anyone could access it).

Encrypt files, permanently delete older logs after a certain amount of time, restrict access to Richard himself.

Windows Live is no more secure than an unlocked front door. How do you think Sigex accomplished all his scamming and hacking back in the day? It's incredible insecure, and the potential for prevented impostor-scams far outweighs the possibility that MSN is somehow, miraculously, more secure then basically any messaging software ever invented

Assuming you're suggesting to use IRC instead of implementing this IM system: please read the entire thread before posting next time. It's already been extensively concluded that an IRC would not be effective and would never be implemented again, as stated by Sythe/Richard.

Anyway, I'll outline why IRC won't work for this suggestion *again*
    1) It doesn't have a login feature that works in tandem with Sythe's login, which means that the entire point of this suggestion (which, I feel I need to remind you, is to eliminate impostor scams on 3rd party IM systems) would be null and void.

    2) It's bloody difficult for IRC noobs to use, and even more difficult to set up as per how this proposed IM system is supposed to work, which is to be available on any page your viewing, ready to use at a moments notice

    3) Richard said never again will an IRC be put on site

I think its an amazing idea, we would cut back on imposters and scammings.. would all and all make the community safer which should be everyones goal.

Support. But, wouldn't this mean that if a hacker got access to a sythe acc, it would be easier for him to scam than it would be now. Because if you hack a sythe acc now, most of the time people won't trade you if you want to do it via PM's only. And if it is a ranked user, people will look for imposter MSN's. Whereas here if an acc is hacked, no one will have any doubt that it could be a hacker/imposter.

I think imposter scammings occur much more then a sythe account being hacked and in turn scamming.
