Still have yet to be "hacked" once. I guess I just have a way of not making myself a target or something.

Pretty simple.

They assume that the brute forcer can try 1,000,000,000 passwords per second.

It assumes that the brute forcer tries in this order (or something close to it):
aaaaaa
aaaaab
...
aaaaaz
aaaaaA
...
aaaaaZ
aaaaa0
aaaaa1
...
aaaaa9
aaaaba

and so on and so forth.

For each character in your password, there are 62 possible entries. a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.

If your password is two characters long, there will be 62 x 62 possibilities. If it is three characters long, it will be 62 x 62 x 62 possibilities.

So say your password is 11 characters long. that is 62 to the eleventh power, which is 62 x 62 x 62 x 62 x 62 x 62 x 62 x 62 x 62 x 62. That is around 52036560683837090000 possibilities. So, if you divide that by a billion, you will you how long it takes (in seconds) for the brute forcer to do it's job. In this case, it would be around 839299365 seconds, which is 13988322 hours or 582846 days or 1596 years.

But, it is noteworthy to add that the password Z9Z9Z9Z9Z9Z would take nearly twice as long to crack than aaaaaaaaa, since it will check "aaaaaaaaaaa" as the first possible 11-character password and "Z9Z9Z9Z9Z9Z" as one of the last passwords (depends on the coding).

The fact of the matter is that once quantum computing realizes more of its potential these "infinity" years will become less than 10 hours. It all depends on the processor, response time ECT, quantum computing will revolutionize it by each bit being 0,1 or 2 as opposed to 0 or 1.

 

I think the vast majority of people that brute-forcers target aren't smart/caring enough to use symbols and such.
