*Repercussions*
-Perma-banning both the seller and buyers runescape accounts.
-Rolling back the traded gold.
-Ultimately, losing the money you spent on the gold, with the seller still gaining IRL Money.

*How to Avoid Duped Gold*
-If the price seems to good to be true, it was more than likely obtained by abusing the glitch.
-Ask the seller his method of obtaining the gold.
-Be cautious how much you trade/buy at one time and the trading method, for security reasons for both parties.

Seen someone selling for .20 - .25, selling at 500M minimum purchase, as you said.. sounds too good to be true. Also considering he starred in a youtube video performing the bug. /facepalm
