Messaging system (not a shoutbox[?])

This won't work because there's often sensitive information users need to censor out before posting their report. These logs will be as easy as MSN logs to edit using photoshop, so that bit wouldn't change at all in the conversion from MSN to on-sight IM

 

Maybe there could be an option whether to record logs so mods can view them or not, as an easy button which you can click, so if you did get scammed they can view the logs straight away and ban them

 

I love this idea. Maybe something like a command prompt, that starts logging the conversation, the logged conversation is then able to be forwarded to a Mod, I know nothing about coding or the likes so I don't know if this is possible or whatever.


E.g. "/startlog" & "/endlog"

 

I don't think this feature would work either because, unless you record all your logs, you never know when you might get scammed and you might miss the opportunity to record the scam. And if you record all your logs, then you might as well just give staff access to all chat logs.

I agree, it will do a major part in removing scamming from the market. I think it'd revitalize the market a bit as well, add something new and exciting that sythe hasn't seen in years.

But in seriousness, I found your thread, and it's not like this. I'm not suggesting a refreshing PM system. It's more like a facebook feature, just look at the link Verts gave in this thread. That's the ideal system, and we just need a hoster (Grave if he's up to it) since it would use up a lot of resources with the size of our userbase. Additionally, you didn't explain your idea well, you basically said "I want a refreshing PM" and people's response would naturally be "wtf too lazy to just click BACK and refresh your inbox by yourself?".

My suggestion has its functionality clearly outlined, AND a clear and highly necessary effect on the forum-- reduction of scam possibilities. That's why mine was considered while yours was brushed aside as "unnecessary and cumbersome"

 

Yeah, I kind of thought it wasn't a lot like mine, but I was thinking that something this large scale would be to much, so I had to downsize, I was thinking one step at a time. But, I do like the Idea, so I support.

 

I just spent the last 30 minutes scrutinizing this app, and I can now say that I stamp this with my revered Stamp of Approval. How long until Sythe can comment on this, because I'm excited for this change.

The IRC is definitely not a substitute for something like this. This would be extremely helpful in trades.

My only concern is the (to my knowledge, fairly real problem) of someone being able to hack/hijack/read messages.

 

You mean as far as a flaw in the security of the plugin? That would be a problem, it'd have to be researched whether the plugin is secure or not. Another problem, though I trust Grave entirely, is that if he's hosting it, he'd probably have exclusive access to the chatlog database. If his server isn't as secure as sythe's, it's possible it could be hacked into, not to mention the awful temptation to have passwords and account names and information streaming through your server...

Well, with large traders (including myself) dealing with thousands of dollars a day I definitely wouldn't trust anyone to see my messages and I really doubt I'd ever risk it for a small convenience in not having to pm a couple people a day.

 

And also because you are smexy and your idea is " Unique".

 

But if it were proven 100% secure, would you make the switch?

Honestly, I don't think this will stop scamming.

The large scamming percentage is from the user itself, not from imposters.

However, this would be easier to contact any user straight away instead of waiting for them to add/make whatever messenger they're using.

On the other hand, I think we should encourage others to search their traders email to find anything unusual. Just like yesterday, by googling an email I found an impostor.

There should be a sticky made about this. It will surely lower the amount of imposter scamming, but you can't really blame the site for that. It's just how gullible you are.

 

It won't stop scamming, we know that. As said before, sythe and scamming are synonymous. But it'll eliminate the possibility of impostors and then it wouldn't be necessary for people to "search their traders emails to find anything unsual" because no one would be able to act like another users when the method of communication they use for trades requires access to their sythe.org account (unless they hack, but that's an entirely different problem altogether.)
