Despite eBook Sales Gains Print Books and Brick and Mortar Stores Still Reign

Recently released data from the Association of American Publishers and the Book Industry Study Group shows that ebook sales more than doubled last year, bringing in some 42.07 billion to the American publishing industry. Ebook sales in 2010 capped at $869 million. The International News says that ebook sales accounted for about six percent of overall publishing revenues. In contrast, traditional published books brought in $11.1 billion last year.

388 million ebooks hit the market last year, representing 15.5 percent of the total fiction and nonfiction books for children and adults, otherwise known as the trade sector. Adult fiction ebooks saw the biggest gains, accounting for 30 percent of revenues, depicting a growth of 117 percent resulting in $1.27 billion in revenue.

Brick-and-mortar stores remained the number one sale chanel, accounting in $8.59 billion in sales. Over all, the publishing industry saw a small 0.5 percent increase in sales, topping out at a cool $13.97.
