Should I make a portfolio site?

Is it worth it to make a portfolio site, or just to join forums and post portfolio threads on it?

I'm considering registering myname.ca or myname.com to show off my past works and have a quick contact me form to quotes. I'm a web designer and developer. I just made about 500m/$250 from Smper for not even one days work. My real question I guess is would the portfolio help, or just be another cost?

In honesty, i wouldn't say that it is a necessity to have your own portfolio site, but if i were to use somebody who had their own site instead of just another thread on the forum i would feel as if they were much more professional, and likely efficient than the latter. When it comes down to it, it's all a matter of appearance, how you present your material, and professionalism. I would say that it would be a benefit to have one and could worth paying for. Best of luck to you :)

EDIT: I have no experience as a web designer or selling things as such. This is strictly from a buyer's standpoint. You may discount this post if you are looking for someone with experience selling things as you are.

I'd say website portfolios are for people who are in business or are going after a design job. Nothing is more impressive than a beautiful site that displays all your graphical abilities. However, if you're just making one to show off what you can do to internet people, it's not worth the time or the money. Just stick with a thread.

Also, when I say "business" I mean to say professional business-- or at least someone who literally works hours a day to make graphics for all the people they've got orders from. See: Kinaesthic, he's the most professional amateur you'll ever see around here. He probably rakes in a few hundred a week. HE has a reason for a portfolio website.

If you're a website designer it's not a waste of time.

Having your past designs and a nice variety should convert you more clients.
