Okay, well I've figured there's a lot of stigma surrounding muslims around the world (maybe stigma isn't a good word for it, but I'll stick with it). So I've decided to at least create a thread around here to try and clear up any confusion about it (if indeed there is any). This thread is dedicated to Ramadan.

So like, ask questions about Islam and especially Ramadan. I don't think a lot of people understand it.

If any other Muslims out there are fasting this month, feel free to post details such as time you're breaking the fast, or the weather and how it's affecting you. Post pics or just detailsof the feed you're getting at Maghrib (or whatever time you break your fast).

    I'll start off.

    Day 3
I had Pizza with Cheesy Chicken Snitzel and some coke for iftar. Didn't wake up for shoor but I still prayed Fajr before sunrise.

I'll post pics of tomorrows feed if it's interesting.

Well, as much as I'd like to learn more about your religion and Ramadan and such, I don't really understand what's going on.

What's Ramadan? why is it celebrated and what's the significance? Why do you fast?

And I don't know what Maghrib, iftar, shoor, or Fajr is. lol.

I have one question about Ramadan. Why do Muslims fast for a certain amount of time of the day, then just eat at another part of the day? To my knowledge the whole point of fasting is to bring about awareness of poverty and not consume as much to preserve resources so that others may have more. I don't understand this, instead of having three meals or whatever each family has a day you consume one bigger meal? Also, what is the point of the feast at the end of Ramadan? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of fasting? I apologize if my information is incorrect, I am just going by what Muslims have told me and things I've read.

Ramadan is a month in the Muslim calendar were we fast. It is celebrated because rewards for doing good in this month are multiplied greatly. We fast in order to gain those rewards. Also shoor is when we eat before we start fasting. Fajr is the deadline to start fasting. Maghrib is the time were allowed to break out fast. And ftoor is the feast we have at maghrib.
    That's harsh. We're I am we're breaking at 5:15 pm.
The reason we fast is much greater than that. That is just a reason we were told as kids because we couldn't fully understand it. Ramadan brings us closer to our god, it teaches us to refrain from wrongdoing, it makes us appreciate the pleasures of life, it gives us an opportunity to fix our sins. The big feast at the end of the month is similar to Christmas, a celebration that god bestowed on us.
I don't think it's possible for a fast to last that long. Seems to be exaggerated.

Here, in Canada, we have to fast from 3AM to 8:40ish PM. It hasn't generally been hard as I wake up late and don't need to wait too long before I can eat, not long enough to go super hungry.

I eat traditional food that is super good. We usually only cook it during this month.

Same over here in the U.S. :). Man I feel bad for eating unhealthily. I also haven't gone to the gym yet :/. But overall, I'm happy to be fasting and happy that Ramadan here.

It's true, check out prayer times in Oslo, Norway on IslamicFinder. That's got to be brutal.

I just don't really get it.
If I am correct you guys are not allowed to eat in the day, but only at night?
And the whole point of fasting is to bring about awareness of poverty and not consume as much to preserve resources so that others may have more, right?

I simply don't get it. You guys indeed do not eat in the day, but its well compensated in the night with even MORE food than you'd most likely eat. Isn't that hypocrit? :/

NOTE: this is not a religious attack or anything against muslims. I'm just interested how they think about it ;)

We don't eat more than we normally do during the night. Our stomachs can only take so much so no, again, we don't eat more than any other normals days.

Think I'll go get myself two double cheeseburgers after reading this ! :p

OT; I see the point of this to bring out awareness of poverty. But I will not support with my own stomach !

    I find fasting easy.

Ramadan isn't solely about raising awareness towards poverty, it's a month in which you dedicate yourself to god. There's more to fasting than just not eating.

Coming from a family with a traditional Christian background I know the custom of fasting and the reasons for fasting, but I was wondering if the Muslims are motivated by the same reasons? Christians do it as a show of strength and self-discipline and to show commitment to God. I personally don't partake as I am not religious, but I am just curious the religious motivations.
